Application filed December 81, 1924. Serial No. 759,186.
-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR BOURQUIN, a
' citizen of the United States, and resident of Waltham, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Lettering Pens,
lowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification,
like characters-on like parts.
This invention relates to lettering or rulthe drawing representing ing pens and it has for one of its objects to I ing member 3 which is formed wit .vide an improved lettering Fig..10 is a side a strip of sheet rovide a novel pen of this type whichcan be used in the ordinary standard pen holder.
Another object of the invention is to propen which is constructed so that the ink will always "flow freely and there will be no tendency for it to clog.
Other objects of the invention are toim-.
prove lettering pens in various ways all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In order to give an understanding of the invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now' be described after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figs. '1 to 8 are sectional views of lettering pens embodying my invention;
Fig. 9 is a section on the line 9-9, Fig. 10; view of a-lettering pen embodyin my invention showing it carried by the ordinary standard pen holder.
The pen signed as a lettering, drawing or ruling pen and. will be found useful by draftsmen, architects, engineers, etcain connection with their work.
The pen has a tubular body provided with an. ink-receiving reservoir and a tubular nozzle through which the ink is delivered.
Referring to Fig. 10 the pen is indicate generally at 1, it having a tubular body which terminates at its lower end in the ndzzle 2. The pen is supported b a clamptwo jaws 4: that embrace the tubular body of the pen, said jaws being shown as formed by bending in Fig. 9. 4
The portion 6 of this holder s received between the arms 7 of the forked portion of a shank; member 8, the latter having the parti cylindrical portion 9 that hassubstanof which the fol-- 'pen to be swung into different herein illustrated is specially de- P metal into the U shape shown 'this type of shape as the stem or shank of the clamping member, said screw having a thumb nut 12 screw-threaded therwn.
This screw 11 performs three different functions. It acts as' a clamping screw for clamping the arms 4 and 5 of the clamping member tightly about the pen, it also acts as a pivotal support between the clamping member and the shank so as to permit the angular positions, and it acts further as a clamping screw for cl'ampm adjusted posltion.
the clamping member in its Lettering pens embodying this invention usually come in sets, each 'set having therein pens adapted to draw lines of different widths. The construction herein provided has the further advantage that the pens are readily interchangeable forby loosening the clamping nut 12 a pen can be readily removed from the clamping jaws and another pen inserted in its place.
The ens may be made in various ways. InFig. 1 I have shown a simple form of en which comprises simply a cylindrical body 13 having the ink-receiving reservoir 14 therein, the lower end ofi the body being tapered to form the nozzle 2 which 'has the ink duct 3 extending therethrough.
The pen shown in Fig. 2 differs from that shown in Fig. 1 in the construction of the nozzle. In Fig. 2 the nozzle 15 of the pen is d made in a separate piece which has a sort of funnel shape and is secured or made fast to the body in any suitable way as by soldering. This form is specially applicable for a pen adapted for fine lettering and which has a very small duct 3. a
The pen shown in Fig. 3 has a cylindrical body portion 13 and ink reservoir 14 and the nozzle 16 thereof isprovided witha slit 17 In Fig.5 a similar construction is shownexcept that the slit is very nearly closed up, psn being specially applicable for some kin of work. 4
In Fig. 6 the nozzle 18 is flared outwardly at its lower end as shown at 19 and it is also provided with a slit 17. This type of pen is specially applicable for making wide lines.
] that crates automatically to keep the pen' In Figs. '7 and 8 I have illustrated a form of pen which-employs an agitator or clearer from ecoming clogged and to ensure an even flow of ink. In this embodiment the body of the pen is shaped to resent the portion of larger diameter and the intermediate portion 21 of smaller diameter between the portion 20 and the nozzle 22.
Situated within the pen is a cleanin device which is provided with a grooved ody portion 23 that is located within and guided yqothe portion-21 of the pen and which is a extends down through the nozzle. The
*sup orted by-the paper and is free for a slig t vertical movement. The 'movement oint is of such a length that when cleaning or grooved body 23 rests on the bottom of the portion 21 of the en the point of the cleaner will roject'slig tly through the end of the nozzlii. Enlarged portion 20 of the body, together with the .ortion 21, provides reservoir of relatively large capacity. 1
The cleaning device is provided with a stem 25-by which it may be manipulated manually whenever it. is'desirable to clean the pen.
When this penis used the tip of the nozzle is placed against the paper and the engagement" of the-paper with the end of the cleaning in 24 will force the cleaning device upwar ly and separate it slightly from the seat 26 on which it normally rests. During the writing operation, therefore,- the cleaner is of the cleaner due to placing the tip against the paper or removing .it from the paper during the latter operation results in pre.r
- it in a free owing condition.
venting the; en from elogging and keeping In Fig.8 1 have iliustrated diiferent embodiment of my invention which is specially applicablefor a pen having a very wide-mouthed nozzle. In this construction the pen has a cylindrical body'27 and the end of the no isflared widely as shown at 28. The cleaner in, this embodiment-is fo'i'med with an enlarged portion 29 that normally seats a ains't' the seats 30 formedby the taper 0ft 9 nozzle. The cleaner m this. instance .is hollow and the lower. end
- 31 is in the-form of a tube which has such.
dimensions that when the enlarged portion 29 rests a inst the seat 30 the end of the cleaner w' 7 project slilgslgtly below the noz- 216. The cleaner is a rovided with a stem 25 by'which it may 1 provided with a cleaning pin24 that manually'ma jnipulated. l l
The device shown in Fig. 8 operates in the same way as. that shown in 'Fig. 7 so far as keeping the penclean is concerned.
It will thus be seen that my invention provides an interchangeable lettering pen which is adapted to be mounted in the ordidelivery nozzle, of a clamping member in which the pen is removably clamped, and a shank supporting the clamping member and constructed to be inserted in an ordinary standard penholden 2. A lettering pen such as described in' claim 1 in which the clamping memberis 1. In a lettering pen," the combination with a pen havingla tubular body and a.
pivoted to the shank sothat the pen can be adjusted into different angular positions relative to the pen holder.
3.. In a lettering pen, the combination with a tubular pen member, of a U-shaped clamping member having clamping jaws embracing said pen member, a supporting shank having a2 forked portion to receive the clamping member, said shank having a curved portion adapted to fit the pen-receivin groove of an ordinary standard pen ho der. V
4. In a lettering en, the combination with a tubular pen memfienof a U-shaped clamping member havin clamping jaws embracing said pen mem er, a supporting shank havin a forked portion to .reeeive the clampmg member, said shank having a curved portion adapted toffit the pen-receivmg groove of ordinary standard penholder, and a combined pivotal and .clamping's'crew extendingthrough the clamping member and the forked portion'of the stem and adjustably clamping them together.
5, In a'lettering pen, the combination with a tubular body having an ink resei'voir and a nozzle, of a cleaning device in the reservoir, said cleaning'device having a pin portion extending through the nozzle and normally-projecting slightly below the latter whereby device will-be rai when tlzdpen is used the cleanin slightly by contact wit the paper.' i
' 1 In testimony iwhereof, .I have signed name to thisf'specification. I
