Be it known that I, HENaY J. Moran, 11 subject of the German Em eror, and a resident of the city of New ork borough of Manhattan, in the county and tate of New York, have invented a new and Im roved Writing Implement, of which the fol owing is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved writing implement more especially designed for lettering purposes and arranged to enable the user to accurately and quickly write letters of the alphabet, or numerals, in heavy'type, preferably with the aid of a lettering templet, such, for instance, as shown and described in the application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 222,702, filed by me under even date herewith.

lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The funnel-shaped body 10,0f the writing implement is provided with a cylindrical spout 11, and'from one side of the upper end of the said body 10 extends an integral arm 12 terminating in a ferrule 13 attached to one end of a handle 14 adapted to be held in the hand of the user the same as an ordinar penholder. and the arrangement is such that when the handle 14 is held by the user the axis of the funnel 10 is disposed vertically, as shown in the drawin s.

Within t e body 10 and its spout 11 is arranged a regulating pin 15 for regulatin the the ink through the lower end 0 the ink. The pin 15 extends through a conical coil 16 of wire or other material and this coil serves to'further retard the outflow of the ink through the spout 11 owing to the tendency of the ink to adhere to the coil. By the arrangement described an even, uniform flow of the ink through the spout 11 is had. The pin 15 is so arranged that it is always flush with the lower end ofthe spout 11 when the implement is used for writing, and the lower end of the spout 11 rests on top of the'paper or other material intended to receive the writing. It is understood that a minute aunular opening is formed between .the pin 15 and the spout 11 and through this opening the ink passes onto the paper at the time the lower end of the s out is moved over the papen. By the com ined action of the spout 11, pin 15 and coil 16 an even, uniform outflow of the ink is produced to insure the formation of well defined letters, numerals, or other signs or characters with the lines of uniform thickness and without danger of the ink spreading while making the lines.

The in 15 terminates at its upper end in a handlie 17 adapted to be occasionally taken hold of by the operator for moving the pin 15 in the body and its spout 11 to free the latter of any obstructing extraneous matter incident to the drying up of the ink, dust or the like. The handle 17 is provided with an opening or a loop 18 through which extends a pin or bail 19 formin an integral part of the upper end of the unnel sha ed ody 10. By the arrangement descri ed the bail 19 .limits the downward sliding movement of the pin 15 so that the lower end thereof is at all times in proper relation to the lower end of the spout 11. The bail 19 also limits the upward sliding movement of the pin 15 whenever the user pulls on the handle 17 in an upward direction and the bail prevents accidental loss of the pin 15 or the coil 16.

The writing implement is preferably used in conjunction with a writlng templet 20 illustrated in Fig. 1, and provided with complementary openings 21, some of which are in the form of letters of the alphabet, others handle, a handled flow regu per on which the templet rests at the time and on which the lines are traced by the spout 11 and its pin 15.

It is understood that when the writing implement is lifted off the paper the ink is not liable to flow out of the spout 11 owing ,to the retarding action of the flow regulatthe implement are of a thickness correspond- *ing to the diameter of the spout 11 as the ink spreads from the circular opening between the spout 11 and pin 15 to the outside diameter of the spout 11 on moving the spout along over the paper.

Having thus described my invention, I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A writing implement, comprising a funnel having a spout and provided with a ating pin with in the funnel and having its lower portion fitting the spout of the fuhnel, means for slidably securing the pin to the funnel and a flow retarding means within the funnel.

2. A writing implement, comprising a funnel having a conical body and an approximately cylindrical spout, an upwardly inclined handle extending from one side of the upper end of the said body, the said handle being at an angle to the axis of the funnel, a flow-re ulating pin slidably mounted in the sai funnel and having its lower portion fittin in the said spout, and a conical flow retar ing coil within the funnel and through which extends the said pin.

3. A writin implement, comprising a funnel having a conical body and an aproximately cylindrical spout, an upwardly inclined handle extending from one side of the upper end of the said body, the said handle being at an angle to the axis of the funnel, a .fiow regulating pin slidably mounted in the said funnel and having its lower portionfitting in the said spout, the said pin being provided with a handle extending above the top of the funnel to allow of agitating the pin, and a conical flow retarding coi in the said funnel and through which the said pin extends.

4. A writing implement, comprising a funnel having a conical body and an approximately cylindrical spout, an upwardly inclined handle extending from one side of he upper end of the said body, the said andle being at an angle to the axis of the funnel, a flow regulating pin within the said funnel and havin its lower portion slidably engaging the sai spout, the said pin being provided with a handle extending above the top of the funnel to allow of agitating the pin, the handle having an opening, a bail on the upper end of the funnel body. and extending through the said handle opening, and a conical flow retarding coil within the funnel and through which the pin extends.
