i 1,527,943 C. H. WEISS PIPE STEM Filed Dec. 24 1923 INVENTOI? A TTORIIEVS Patented Feb. 24, 1925.
CARL HENRY WEISS, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
PIPE STEM.
Application filed December 24, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL HENRY \Vnrss, a
I citizen of the United States, and a resident of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe Stems, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates'to improvements in pipe stems, more particularly in the end of the stem or hit portion, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device which will permit a free draft, but which will prevent the concentration of a stream of smoke upon the tongue, thereby obviating the burning effect which is present in pipes having a straight bore.
A further object of my invention is to provide a pipe stem which, while having a free draft, will prevent the saliva from entering the stem and interfering with the proper operation of the pipe.
A further object of ,my invention is to provide a device of the type described, in which the end of the stem has a passage extending upwardly and thence downwardly, and terminating at a slot, beneath which is a spreader device by means of which the smoke is spread before it emerges, and which is therefore cooled in the spreading operation.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a pipe constructed according to my invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the pipe stem, showing the course of the bores which permit the smoke to be drawn through the stem,
Figure 3 is an enlarged section showing the manner in which the bores may be made, and
Figure 4: is an end View of the stem.
In carrying out my invention, I may make use of a stem portion 1 of any suitable material, having a central bore 2, and being provided with a reduced threaded portion?) at one end for connection to the portion 4 of the pipe bowl 5. Communicating with the Serial No. 682,462.
bore 2 is a bore 6 which, as will be seen from Figure 2, extends upwardly. The bore 6 communicates with the bore 7 which extends downwardly and forwardly, and terminates at a slot 8. The upper surface of the portion 9 is flat, as will be seen from the drawings, while the lower portion is preferably curved, as shown at 10, to conform to the contour of the tongue. At 11, I have shown a groove which extends across the top of the bit and which provides means for holding the stem firmly in the mouth, since it permits the teeth to get a good grip on the stem.
The portion 12 at the end of the curved lower portion 10 forms also a means which will abut the lower teeth, thus further insuring a good grip on the stem.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. In preparing the stem, the central bore 2 may be made in the usual manner, and then a straight bore 6 may be run from the forward end of the bit to connect with the bore 2,
as shown in Figure 3. The bore 7 may then berun from the same place, i. e., at the forward end of the bore 6, until it intersects with the slot 8. The intersection of the bores 6 and 7 may then be closed, as by a plug 13. This then provides a passage for the smoke from the bowl through the bore 2, upwardly through the bore 6, and downwardly and forwardly through the bore 7. When the smoke hits the upper flat surface of the portion 9, the stream of smoke is spread out and emerges from the slot 8 at the front and at the sides thereof, so that when the smoke is drawn into the mouth, it is partially cooled by its projection into the member 9. Furthermore, the concentrated stream of smoke is diffused, so that with apipe using this stem end of bit there is no danger of burning the tongue.
A further advantage, however, which the construction gives is that it will prevent the saliva from flowing into the pipe stem, for it will be observed that the bore 7 extends upwardly and forwardly until it communi- ,cates with the bore 6. Even though the pipe wire or other cleaning device to be thrust through the passages 6 and 7, after which the plug may be replaced.
It Will be understood that this stem may be made of any suitable material, and while I have shown a. threaded connection to the major pipe portion, it might be connected in any suitable manner, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a pipe, a stem having a longitudinal bore, a bit portion inte ral with said stem, said bit portion having a slot extending inwardly from the end thereof, a smoke passage extending upwardly from said slot, and thence downwardly, and communicating with the bore, the portion underneath the slot constituting a protecting shield for the tongue of the smoker.
2. In a pipe, a stem having a longitudinal bore, a bit portion integral with said stem, a tongue shield carried by said bit portion and a smoke passage extending from said longitudinal bore upwardly into said bit portion, and thence downwardly so as to direct the stream of smoke against said shield.
8. In pipe, a stem having a longitudinal bore, a bit portion integral with said stem, a tongue shield carried by said bit portion and a smoke passage extending from said longitudinal bore upwardly into said bit portion, and thence downwardly and rearwardly so as to direct the stream of smoke against said shield.
CARL HENRY 131855.
