Description

WITNESS:
Feb. 4. 1925. 1,527,864
I. B. GOLDMAN BOOK COVER Filed March 4, 1922 (Ill f8 Patented Feb. 24, 1925.
UNITED STATES ISRAEL B. GOLDMAN, OF MEMEHIS, TENNESSEE.
BOOK COVER.
Application filed March 4, 1922. Serial No. 541,171.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, IsRAnL B. GOLDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to book covers and more particularly to a cover designed for use on catalogues, or analogous types of litorature, and an object of the invention is to provide a detachable spring cover holder which is carried by the cover of the book and is adapted to engage the leaves.
Another object of this invention is to provide a book cover as specified which is designed so as to permit the changing of leaves when desired, or permit the addition of leaves to the catalogue, and also to provide a book cover which will permit the assembling of any desired leaves in book or catalogue form thereby allowing any business house sending out catalogues to make up a compact neat appearing catalogue of any of their types of merchandise, depending upon the desires of the purchaser or person receiving the catalogue.
A further object of this invention is to provide abook cover as specified which will not add materially to the weight of the book or catalogue, and one which will result in considerable savings in printing expenses, as the covers are always the most expensive items of catalogues.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a book using the improved cover.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section through the cover.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved book cover comprises a binder 1 which is constructed of suitable spring or resilient sheet metal to provide a bight portion 2 and catalogue or book leaf engaging legs 3 which converge towards their free ends for the major portion of their lengths and then curve outwardly to provide arcuate nonrupturing surfaces for engagement with the leaves 4 of the book. Extensions 5 are formed upon the legs3 in parallel spaced relation thereto to form slots 5, the said extensions having their free edges adjacent the bight portion 2, the lines of conjunction between the legs 3 and extension 5 being rounded as shown at 6 to prevent rupturing of the leaves 4 during the assembling of the book. The cover proper, indicated at 7 may be formed of any suitable material such as heavy paper or the like, of which catalogue covers are commonly formed, and it comprises the front 8 and back 9 together, the connecting portion 10 which is doubled into the space between the legs 3 and extensions 5 and form fins 5 as clearly shown at 11 in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The resiliency of the legs 3 and extensions 5 will tightly grip the folded portions of the cover therebetween securely connecting the cover to the leaf binder structure 1.
In assembling a catalogue or book using the improved removable cover, the outermost sections of the book are preferably placed first between the facing surfaces of the legs 3 after which the intermediate sections are forced between the outer sections, and to facilitate this action any suitable flat bar such as a thin strip of metal may be used to provide sufficient rigidity to the inner edges of the section and after the sections have been forced in place, the strip of metal should be withdrawn which will leave the book or catalogue in proper assembled condition.
It will be observed from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that any of the leaves or sections of the book or catalogue may be removed at will, and other leaves or sections substituted therefor, if desired, or that additional leaves or sections may be used, and also that by use of the improved cover the thickness or bulkiness of the book will not be materially increased, and that catalogues .may be made up at the business houses or factory to include only leaves describing the articles in which the individual purchaser is interested thereby resulting in a material saving of catalogue cost.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in other relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
As a new article for manufacture, a book cover comprising a leaf binder formed from a sheet metal strip bent interi ediate its ends to form spaced converging leg portions, a
transverse bight portion, the outer ends of said leg portions being bent upon themselves whereby the ends thereof are disposed in spaced parallel relation with the said legs to form slots, the outer ends of the legs being arranged adj aeent the ends of the bight portion and aeover having its eonneeting por- 10 tion bent upon itself at spaced intervals and shaped to provide substantially parallel fins adaptedto'he'inseiied into said slots.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ISRAEL B. GOLDMAN.
