UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK M. WEST, JAMES B. THURSTON, AND WILLIAM K. PHELPS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LETTER-COPYING PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,783, dated July 7, 1874; application filed December 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK M. W Es'r, JAMES B. THURSTON, and TILLIAM -K. PHELPS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Letter-Copying Presses, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of a portable writingdesk to which our improvement has been applied, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same, taken through the line as a Fig. 1.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents an ordinary portable writingdesk, in one end of which is formed an opening for a drawer or slide, B, of such a size as to conveniently receive the letter-book O. The drawer B may be made either with or without side-boards, as may be desired. D is a roller, which is made of a length equal, at least, to the breadth of the letter-book O, and the journals of which are pivoted to springs E, of such a strength as to press the roller D down upon the book 0 with sufficient force to take the copy properly. The springs E are secured to the desk A in such a position that the roller D may bear upon the letter-book (J as the drawer B is inserted in its place, and may roll along said book from end to end as the said drawer is pushed in.
The roller D E and drawer B may be applied to a portable writing-desk, as shown in the drawings, to an ofliice desk or table, or to a box constructed expressly to receive theln.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-' The combination, with desk A and the FRANK M. VEST. J AMES B-THURSTON. \V. K. PHELPS.
