F". L. KIMBALL CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed Feb. 15, 1924 l, Franc/'5 L. /f/'mbw/ Patented Feb. 2 4, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT- oFFlcE.
.FRANCISL XIMBA'LL, 0F SPOIKANE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 HQMER PRATHER, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
CIGARETT HOLDER.
Application filed February 15, 1924. Serial No. 692,997.
By the utilization of my invention a novel and attractive device for smokers use 1s provlded which lnsures sanitation for the smoker7 affords cleanliness to the dwelling' by preventing the dropping of ashes as the cigarette is being consumed, adds to the pleasure of the smoker when the cigarette is being enjoyed in the open air, and assures a convenient and reliable means'for holding the cigarette when in use.
With these ds in view the invention consists in certain ovel parts and combinations and arrangements of features of construction as will hereinafter be more fully set 'forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one completeexample of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged in accordance with the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.v
. Figure 1 isa view in side 'elevation of the device of my invention.
Fi re 2 is a central, longitudinal'sectiona view of the device of Figure 1 on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a still further enlarged, detail sectional view of the device, partly broken n away, illustrating the clamping or retaining y `means of the holder.
Figure Llis a perspective view of the combined cigarette clamp and attaching plug l within the holder.
In carryin out my invention I 'utilize the r usual form o mouth piece 1 of suitable inateiiaL and preferably fashioned with the customary end bead 2. At the end opposite to' the' beadI the mouth piece-in enlargedland fashioned with an exteriorly tapered head 3 and interiorly threaded socket The cigarette C is retained at one end in the cylindrical metallic head 5, the latter being fashioned with -anumber of fingers p to clasp the end of the cigarette. .1 These fingers are preferably of resilient metal to permitthe cigarette end being inserted between them and into the open head J5, or the resilient fingers 4may be slipped over the end of the cigarette if preferred.
Each of the fingers is provided with an outward bend l which bends form an annular series of friction faces extending transversely ofJthe fingers and projected beyond the periphery of the hollow lmetallic head 5 of the retainer'. The metallic head is secured in the mouth piece lby means ofthe hollow screw lplug 8 fashioned integral with the metallic. head and of the proper diameter to fit neatly into the Socket 4 of the mouth piece. v
The mouthpiece and retaining head with its lingers thus form a holder for the cigarette C as indicated, and in combination with these parts I preferably utilize a tubular shield or cylinder 9 of suitable material for enclosing the cigarette: and .performing the functions of an ash receptacle. The tubular cover or shield is provided with perforations 10 extending' transversely through :its
Vwalls and occupying substantially the erftire area of the shield, and at one' of its openl ends is fashioned with beveled walls as 11 to form a tapered socket or seat for frictional engagement with the tapered head y 3 of the mouth piece, thus providing a subi stantial connection or .joint between'lthese.
members of the device.` l
The shield is of suiicient andample-size to completely enclose the entire length of the cigarette C, and` anI annular .exterior groove is formed in the shield, near its outer' end, to provlde an interior annular r1b or bead 12 which performs the-functions of a i .i
support for the free end of the cigarette. After the cigarette has beenproperly positioned Ain the retaining Vheadand ngers of the holder, the shield is slip ed over the free end of the cigarette and t e socket ofl the shield, frictionally engaged lwith the tapered headof the mouth ieee. In the absence of the cover or shiel theuiingers 6 grasp 'the cigarette with sufficient firmness to retain the cigaretteV therein. When the cover is slid into place on the mouth 'piece the interior surface of the shield frictionall'y contacts with the protuberances 7 ofthe" fingers, slightly compressing Athe. fingers on the cigarette to clamp them and more firmly retain the end of the cigarette in the fingers.
The annular bead 12 which surrounds the free end of the cigarette exerts .sufficient frictionlthereon to support the cigarette but does not. restrict it sufficiently to prevent a f' draft o f smoke therethrough. Norl do the. compressed'll'fingers exert pressure on the cigarettefsuc'h would interfere with the passageof smokeV tothemouth piece.
' In addifontofthe y'ntilationof the in- .,.teriorAof'ithe,shield by the presence of the perforations therein I place a reticulated screen ordisk" 13 in the outer end of the cylindrical shield, which is secured therein by means of laf-screw ring 14 threaded into the end of thefshield.
l shield are of, suflicient slzel to permitventilation of the interior thereof they are not large enoughto permit spilling of the ashes. The ashes-are-emptied by firstremovin the shield andthen they may be poured t erefrom, and the butt end of the cigarette withdrawn the holder. i
panels, of glass or other ma;
Having thus fullydescribed my invention,
what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination with a mouth piece i having a-Socket, of a holder comprising a hollow head and hollow screwplu'g, resilient fingers on said head having an annular series of protuberances, an enclosing shieldy a hollow screw plug in saidy socket, resilient l fingers on said head and friction members on said fingers, an enclosing, perforated shield having a tapered end seat to frictionally engage said tapered end, and said shield adapted to engage said friction members for thepurpose described.
3. The combination with a mouth piece having a tapered end and. threadedsocket therein, of ahollow retaining 'headhaying a hollow screw plug in said socket, resilient fingers on said head having protuberances, an enclosing perforated shield having a tapered end seat to fit said tapered end and adapted to frictionally engage said pro- 4tuberances, a screen and securing means therefor in the free end of the shield, and
said shield having an interior annular rib,
FRANoIs L'.v KIMBALL.
