IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF MASKS'.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,740, dated Jlily 7, 1874; application led May 14, 1874.

To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that I, LEONHARD GIRBARDT, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented certain Improvements in Masks to be applied to hats and caps, of which the following is a specication:

This invention consists of a method of forming a mask to be applied to hats and caps, which is constructed of flexible material, with an interposed layer of india-rubber or its equivalent, and pressed between dies possessing the contour of the face, as will be hereinafter fully described.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a front View of av cap containing my invention, the view showing the band extended. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a like vertical section taken when the band is folded u p. Fig. 4 is a front View of a cap of a different style, also containing my invention, the band being shown extended. Fig. 5 is a sectional View of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a like section taken when the band (in Fig. 4) is folded up. Fig. 7 is a detailed sectional View of the mask, taken through the nose part, the scale being somewhat enlarged.

In carrying out my invention, I take two pieces of iiexible material, D and E, and interpose between them a thin layer or sheet of india-rubber, F, and out the same to the proper size of the human face, and then provide aperthe eyes, after which it is subjected .t0 pressure between heated dies having the vcontour or outline of the human face, so as to impart a corresponding shape, and to produce in it the general outlines of the nose and brow and side face and chin of the human face.

The mask, constructed as abovedescribed, is designed to be attached to a hat or cap, which latter is constructed with a band, B, that will drop down, as shown in Figs. l, 2, 4, and 5, or folded up around the base ofthe ears, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.

In applying the mask, I take a portion ot the front part of the band B, of suicient cX- tent to cover the face, and line it with a suitable lining, and interpose between the two the layer or sheet of rubber F, and then unite the lining and band, so as to confine the rubber between them. The portion selected for the mask is cut to the proper size of the human. face, and the apertures for the eyes made, and then subjected to pressure.

I do not broadly claim the combination of a flexible mask with a hat or cap, for sach is old; but

I claim- The method of forming a mask of iiexible material by means of interposed india-rubber, or its equivalent, and of diesV possessing the contour of the face, substantially as herein dcscribed.
