Description

Fatented Feb. 24%, 192.5.
WTENT JOHN T..PETERSON, MAYVOD, ILLINOIS.
BLOW'IORGH.
Application filed May 31,
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, lor-tn l. Pic'rnnsozr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maywood, in the county of @ook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Blowtorches, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in torches and has for its object to provide a soldering iron or branding` iron torch having a fuel super-heating chamber.
Another object of the invention is to provide a blow torch having a heating and Super-heating chamber extending over and approximately the full length of the burner thereof.
Vith the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational sectional view of my improved blow torch; and
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 thereof.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1 is a blow torch embracing a fuel tank 2, a burner 3, a heating chamber et, a super-heating chamber 5, a feed pipe 6 to the heating chamber, a generating cup .7 and a needle valve 8. The feed pipe 6 is threaded at one end to the end wall 9 of the tank 2 and at its other end into the wall 10 of the burner casting 11. The casting 11 is divided into two cylindrical chanibers the larger chamber 12 being a burner chamber and the smaller chamber 5 being a superheating chamber which extends to adjacent the outer end 13 of said burner chamber. A pipe 14 is screw threaded into the end 15 of the pipe 6 and is held suspended thereby within the chamber 5, said pipe 11i extend ing to very near the end wall 1G of the chamber 5, said pipe 14 being of a smaller diameter than the chamber 5 and thus provides a passage for the heated gases to pass from the pipe 14 to enter the chamber 5, from which they are forced rearwardly to the vertical bore 17 which runs down from the rear lower portion of the chamber 5 through the casting 11. The inner end 18 of the casting 11 is provided with an eXtension 19 which is threaded internally to rec eive the threaded valve stem 2O of said needle valve 8, and externally to receive the cap 21. The valve seat 22 is screw threaded 1923. Serial No. 642,675.
and screws through the threaded bore 23 in the wall 2st of the burner chamber 12. rThe stem 2O has a right angular handle end 25, whereby the needle 8 may be adj usted. Vl`hc generator cup 7, has an integral plug 26 er tending upwardly from .its bottom will to above the edge 27 of the cup, said plughaw ing its upper end screw threaded to thread into the lower end of the valve chamber 1'? whereby the member 26 forms a. closure for said valve chamber and a sup-port for said cup. A lug 28 extends from the bottom of the chamber 12 and has an opening 29 therein to receive the pin 30 which carries the branding iron 31. The plug` 32, screw threaded into the cap 33 carries an air plump 34 which is operated by the stem 35 which is provided by the screw portion 36 whereby said portion may be threaded into the plug to prevent movement when not being used for pumping air in the tank 2.
The branding device may be removed from the torch and a soldering iron slipped or threaded into the open end thereof.
Having described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
1. A blow torch including an elongated fuel tank constituting in itself a handle for the torch, a feed pipe communicating with the forward en'd of said tank and extending forwardly therefrom in axial alignment with said tank, a casting secured at its rear end to the forward end of said feed pipe and having two parallel chambers of approximately equal. lengths but of different diameters, the one of larger diameter constituting the combustion chamber' of the torch and the other constituting a heating chamber, the latter being longitudinally aligned with said tank and feed pipe, a pipe forming an extension of sai'd feed pipe located within said heating chamber and terminating in an open end a little to the rear of the forward end of said chamber, said casting having a downwardly extending passage communicating with the rear end of said heating chamber and lying rearwardly of said combustion chamber, a needle valve controlling an opening from said passage into said combustion chamber, the stem of said valve extending axially of said com bustion chamber and terminating at its rear end in a handle just forward of said fuel tank, and a priming cup located below said passage and the rear of the combustion Chamber, said cup having an upward eXtension threaded at its upper end into the lower end of said passage to elose the same.
2. A blow torch including an elongated fuel tank constituting in itself a handle for the toreh, a feed pipe communicating with the forward end ot said tank and extending forwardly therefrom in axial alignment with said tank, a casting secured at its rear end to the forward end of said iteed pipe and having two parallel Chambers of approximately equal lengths but ot different "diameters, the one ot larger diameter oonstituting the combustion chamber of a the toreh and the other constituting a heating Chamber, the latter heilig longitudinally aligned with said tank and feed pipe, a pipe forming an extension of said Jfeed pipe located within said heating chamber and terminating in an open end a little to the rear of the forward end of said chamber, said Casting having a downwardly extending passage communicating with the rear end of said heating chamber and lying rearwardly of said Combustion chamber, a needle Valve controlling an opening from said passage into said combustion chamber, the stem ol said valve extending axially oi' said eolnbustion chamber and terminating` at its rear end in a handle just 'forward of said fue] tank, and a priming eup located beneath said combustion Chamber.
