DE VERE w. TERPENEY FIRE STARTER Filed Feb. 6, 1925 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 11, 1925.
erica.,
DE VERE VJ'. TERPENEY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
FIRE STARTER.
Application filed February 6, 1925.
To all whom t may 00a-cera.'
Be it known that I, DE VERE W. TER- rnNnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire Starters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for igniting coal or other fuel in heating furnaces without the use of kindling, charcoal or kerosene, consisting in subjecting the coal or other fuel 'to an intense gas {iame from a burner pipe whereby ignition is accomplished.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tapered forward end portion which includes longitudinally extending radially disposed apertured ribs which owing to their peculiar configuration will allow a greater volume or spread of flame when inserted in the fuel or the like so that the fire will be more quickly started.
A further obj ect of the invention is the provision of a novel form of tool which owing to its simplicity of construction and novel arrangement of parts, may be easily and readily attached to a hot water heater pipe which is arranged adjacent the heating furnace and readily and easily attached thereto whereby the fire starter may be positioned adjacent the draft opening in the front of the furnace in order that it may be readily and easily inserted therein.
With the above and other objects in view,
f" the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention with the igniting means attached therewith.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the starter per se.
Figure 8 is a transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1. ,I
Figure t is a similar view taken on line 1 -4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a burner pipe which tapers toward its forward end portion and includes thereon a pointed end 11 and a plurality of longitudinally extending radially disposed aper- Serial No. 7,351.
tured ribs 12 arranged adjacent the pointed end 11 thereof. The opposite end of the pipe 10` is cross sectioned concaved at 13 and includes thereon a coiled wire which acts as a heat insulating handle for the tool. The rear end portion of the pipe 10 is pointed as at 15 and includes a plurality of elongated slots around the outer sides thereof and which slots are adapted to selectively register with correspondingly shaped slots l arranged in a cap member 16 including an inwardly extending annular flanged portion 17 which engages over the enlarged portion of the rear end portion 15 of the pipe 10 whereby the cap 16 may be held against accidental displacement on the rear end of the pipe 10 whereby the slots 18 therein may be brought into selective registration with corresponding slots arranged in the rear end of the pipe 10 whereby proper air inlet is assured for the mixture of a gas therein. In order to provide gas inlet means for the pipe 10 I provide a relatively short pipe 19 which is threadedly secured as at 2O within the rear end 15 of the pipe 10 and which has secured to the opposite end thereof a iieXible tube 21 having a pet cock 22 connected to lthe opposite end thereof and which in turn includes a screw cap 23 whereby the tool may be connected or associated with a .gas pipe 24@ through the instrumentality of the T-shaped pipe 25 which has its upper end portion threadedly secured within the screw cap 23.
It will thus be seen that upon turning on of the gas to the pet cock 22 that the gas will enter through the flexible tube 21, the pipe 19, into the rear end 15 of the pipe 10 and upon turning or rotating the cap 16 upon the rear end 15 thereof it will be seen that a proper air mixture may be determined as indicated by the color of the blaze emitted from the forward end portion of the pipe 10l which would be preferably blue in order to facilitate heating and owing to the pointed portion 11 upon the forward end portion of the pipe 10, it will be clearly apparent that the tool may be easily and readily inserted within a draft or other opening provided in the furnace whereby the said tool may be inserted within` the fire bed of the furnace and left in its position in order that the iire may be started without the use of kindling, charcoal, kerosene and the like, whereby a person may form a bed of coal within his furnace and not smoke up the adjoining` neighborhood with the sinoke of trash, wood and the like generally used in starting iires.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its forni, proportions and in-inor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to inake such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described iny invention what is claimed is:
A liire starter of the character described comprising ay forwardly tapered pipe having a. relatively sharp forward end portion, a pluralitywof longitudinally extending radially disposed apertured ribs provided adjacent the forward end `portion of the pipe, a constricted portionv 'provided adjacent the rear end of the pipe,'a coil oi wire surrounding said constricted portion forming a handle, the rear end of the pipe being substantially pointed and including a plurality of elongated air inlet openings therein, a cap ineniber received on'this end and including an inwardly extending annular flange portion which extends over the enlarged inner portion of the rear end and including a plurality of correspondingly shaped registering air inlet openings therein, a relatively short pipe extending rearwardly troni the rear end of the pipe, and 'uel inlet ineans conn cted to this pipe whereby the inixer of the fuel emitted troni the forward end portion oi the burner pipeinay be determined.
ln testimony whereof I arl'ix niy signature.
