FUEL-ATOMIZER FOB SELF-PROPELLED TORPEDOES.
Application filed December 19, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RADIGUER, citizen of the French Republic, residing at St.-Denis, Department of the Seine, in France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Fuel- Atomizers for Self-Propelled Torpedoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In a generator operating by combustion and vaporization, or an air heater for increasing the energy of the fluid, which is supplied to the motor of a self propelled torpedo, it is important, in order to secure the best results, that the distribution of the fuel and the ignition should both be operated by apparatus arranged in the axis of the generator of the heater.
According to the present invention this condition is fulfilled by combining the ignition cartridge with the fuel distribution means. This combination has moreover a very appreciable advantage over the means hitherto used because it permits of consuming liquid fuels which could not be used heretofore, such as heavy petroleum, mazouts and so on. In fact, in the combination constituting the invention, the ignition cartridge fulfils the function of the heater; the petroleum circulation pipe which surrounds the ignition cartridge permitting of the utilization of the radiation of heat liberated by the slow combustion of the powder for heating the fuel and raising it to a suitable temperature insuring its combustion.
The accompanying drawing is a longitudinal section through the apparatus which shows by way of example, a method of carrying the invention into effect.
Fuel is supplied through the pipe A; it circulates in the annular chamber B and is distributed by multiple jets C.
The ignition cartridge is formed by a cylindrical tube D into the end of which a plug E screws, carrying a narrow tube F Specification of Letters Patent.

forming a central chimney; a nozzle G provided with a primer H closes the other end of the cartridge. nected to the piston J is provided with a locking arrangement K for retaining it cocked.
The operation is as follows: On starting, compressed air from a pipe connected to the pipe L exerts pressure on the piston J; the locking arrangement is released, the percussion pin I strikes and ignites the primer, and the cartridge burns. which is supplied shortly after ignition is heated by contact with the hot cartridge and is easily ignited, in the generator or in the heater.
The constructional details of the invention may be modified without departing from the general principle; thus the ignition cartridge may be differently arranged; the primer may be located in another position and the locking or percussion arrangement may be modified or altered.
I claim: I
1. The combination with a fuel atomizer for torpedoes and the like, of an ignition cartridge associated with the atomizer and adapted to heat the fuel supplied by the atomizer upon the burning of the cartridge.
2. The combination with a fuel atomizer for torpedoes and the like, of an ignition cartridge associated with the atomizer and adapted to heat the fuel supplied by the atomizer upon the burning of the cartridge, and means associated with the atomizer for igniting the cartridge.
3. The combination with a fuel atomizer for torpedoes and the like, of an ignition cartridge associated therewith, means to supply fuel to the atomizer, and means associated with the atomizer for igniting said cartridge, the burning of the cartridge resulting in a heating of the fuel.
4:. The combination with a fuel atomizer for torpedoes and the like, of an ignition cartridge associated therewith, means operable under fluid pressure for igniting said cartridge, and means to' supply fuel to the atomizer, the burning of the cartridge after A percussion pin I con- The petroleum ture, in presence of two Witnesses.
