. UNITED STATE/IVS PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD c. MANGIN, or COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO.
MINER/S LAMP.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD C.MANGIN, a citizenof the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Lamps, of which thefollowing 1s a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in miners lamps and has for its object to provide adevice of this character which will be simple, strong, and exceedingly convenient to handle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lamp of this character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in' the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a miners lamp constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a tubular body member having one of its ends open and provided with the internal screw threads 2. This body member is adapted to serve as a supply reservoir to contain the oil, gasolene, wood alcohol, or other illuminating material which may be used. The material is introduced into the body through the tubular extension 3 formed integral with the body at one side thereof, said tubular extension having its outer end provided with the screw threads 4, upon which a threaded cap 5 is secured to prevent any leakage of the material after the reservoir has been filled.
A cylindrical plug 6 is provided having external screw threads 7 formed thereon and adapted to be threaded in the open end of the body 1. This plug is provided at one end with a tapering portion 8, and having a threaded reduced portion 9 formed on its outer end. The plug 6 is provided with the centrally arranged opening '10 in which is arranged the wick tube 11, said tube extend- Specificationof Letters Patent.

tional engagement with the wall of the opening 10 to hold the same in position. A wick 12 is arranged within the tube 11 and having its inner end extending beyond the end of ing into the body 1 and is adapted for fricthe tube so as to absorb the illuminating i i material from the body member, the outer end of the wick extending slightly beyond the outer end of the tube so that it can be quickly and easily ignited.
A tubular regulating sleeve 13 is provided having internal screw threads formed at one end thereof and adapted to engage with the threadedreduced portion 9 so thatthe same may be adjusted to regulate the size of the flame. within the sleeve 13 and spaced from the wall, said tubular member being adapted to be slidably mounted upon the upper end of the wick tube 11. The space between the sleeve 13 and the tubular member 14 is closed at the outer end of the sleeve 13 as shown at 15 so as to prevent any leakage of the illuminating material at this point.
A tubular cap 16 is provided and adapted to be arranged over the tubular sleeve 13 and to inclose the outer end of the wick when the same is not in use so that the lamp may be easily carried about in the pocket. To prevent accidental'loss of this cap the same is attached by means of the chain 17 to the body portion of the lamp.
From the above description taken in connection with the drawings the use, advantages, and operation of my improved miners lamp will be readily understood.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing frgm the scope thereof.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a tubular body member, having an open end provided with internal screw threads, an externally threaded plug adapted to be screwed into the open end of the body member, a tapering portion formed on said plug, having a reduced threaded end, said plug being provided with a centrally arranged opening, a Wick tube disposed within said opening, a regulating sleeve threaded on the reduced end of the A tubular member 14 is arranged tapering portion and adapted for adjustment to regulate the size of the flame, a tubular member disposed Within said sleeve and arranged in spaced relation with the walls thereof, said tubular member being secured to the sleeve at the outer end thereof whereby the space between the tubular memher and the sleeve will be closed to prevent any leakage of the illuminating material at this point.
2. In a device of the charaoterrdescribed, the combination of a tubular body member, having an open end provided with internal screw threads, an externally threaded plug adapted to be screwed into the open end of the body, a tapering portion formed on the outer end of said plug, having a reduced threaded end, said plug being provided with a centrally arranged opening, a wick tube disposed in said opening and adapted to frictiona-lly engage the Wall thereof to hold with internal screw threa r be screwed on to said threaded reduced portion, said sleeve being adapted for adjustsaid tube in position, a wick arranged within said tube, a regulatin sleeve provided s and adapted to ment to regulate the size of the flame, a tubular member disposed within said sleeve and arranged in spaced relation with the -walls thereof, said tubular member being 3 secured to the sleeve at the outer end thereof f whereby the space between the tubular member and the sleeve willbe' closed to prevent 5 any leakage of the illuminating material at this point.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature? in the presence of two witnesses; EDWARD G, MANGIN.
