Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE IV. KENDRICK, OF CAMERON, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,648, dated June 30, 1874; application led Aprn 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, GEORGE W. KENDnIcK, of Cameron, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Swivel-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures ot' reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawing is a representation of a plan view of my swivelcoupling, and Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and efficient contrivance for coupling cars `together should a draw-head be casually pulled out of its place, without the necessity of having to resort to chaii'l-conneetions. To the accomplishment of this object the nature of my invention consists in the employment of a swivel-stein with a key attached to it for connection with the follower, in combination with a turn buckle, aswiveleyepin, and a cou pling-link, whereby a close and positive connection between cars can be made should a draw-head be rendered inoperative, as will be herein after more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a turn-buckle, and B a stem, which is applied to this buckle so as to turn freely about its lougitudinal axis in one end thereof. The stern B is constructed with a head, b, which pre vents it from being drawn out of the buckle A, and this stem is also constructed with a slot through one end to receive a key, by which it is connected to a draw-head follower, in the event of the detachment of a draw-head at places on a road where repairs cannot be made. The end of the turn-buckle A opposite that to which the swivel-stem is applied. as described, is screw-tapped to receive the threaded end c of an eyebolt, C, which bolt is adjustable, and it can be fixed at any desired point by means ot' a jam-nut, (l. The said eyebolt C has connected to it a link, D, which is the coupling-link of my improved device.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A swivel-coupling consisting of a pin, B, a buckle, A, an eyebolt, C, and a link, D, combined and constructed as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE NVASHINGTON KENlDRICK.
Witnesses f GEO. DUNCAN, ABRAM BYRON.
