UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC EDWARD s. oaarna, or KEOKUK, IOWA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,014, dated January 2, 1883.
Application filed October 3, 1882. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD S. CARTER, of Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Gar- Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and reliable coupling for railway-cars, which may be applied to the ordinary drawhead and used with the ordinary link, ifnecessnry.
The invention consists in a coupling loop or link which is arched or bowed upward in the direction of its length, one end of said loop or link being secured upon an operating or handled shaft or rod bearing in the hooked head of a coupling-pin of a draw-head, while its opposite or free end is adapted to take over the similar hooked head of the coupling-pin of a meeting draw-head, substantially as hereinaf ter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section representing two draw -heads provided with my im- Fig.2 is a plan view of the same.
A A are draw-heads of any usual or desired construction, and .B B are the draw-head pins,
passing vertically through the draw-heads in the usual manner and secured in place by pins a at the under side of the draw-heads, or in place of the pins a, nuts or any other suitable devices may be used. The pins B are formed with flatheads b, that are beveled or rounded upon their front edges and slightly concave at the back edges, thereby giving to the heads a hook shape.
Through the-head of one or both of'the pins a rod or rods D pass transversely, and upon the rod of each pin is pivoted or hung a loop or open link, E, which is ofa length for extending to and taking over the head of the pin in the adjoining draw-head. The ends of the cross-rod D extend to the sides of the car and are bent at right angles to serve as handles for turning the said rod, and thereby raising and lowering the link, and, ifdesired, there may be a rod passing from either end of the rod D to the top of the car for use with freight-cars.
It will be observed that the 'link or loop is arched or bowed upward in the direction of its length, whereby the points of hearing are confined to the pin-heads and the link or loop can be applied to a drawhead of any of the known forms without reducing or providing a flat surface thereon for the link as heretofore constructed to rest on.
These devices form a simple and eflicient coupling for cars, which may be operated from the side'of the car, and require no changes in the ordinary draw-heads for their application thereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-heads A A, of the conpllng link or loop E, arched or bowed upward in the direction of its length, with one end connected to a haudled shaft or rod, 1), bearing in the hooked head b of the coupling-pin B, while its other end is adapted to take over a similarly-headed pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. EDWARD S. CARTER. Witnesses:
