'1? all 107mm it may won/m n Be it known that I, WALTER P. Mnurrrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at hicago, in the county of Cook and State of enlarged detail front elevation of the pinlever. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on the irregular line .7-7 Fig. 2, the levers being removed looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of a release rigging embodying my invention, attached to a car, adapted to operate a bottom operating coupler. Fig. 9 is a top plan view of Fig. 8. Fig. 10 is a. top plan View of a release rigging showing another embodiment of my invention, Fig. 11 is a front elevation of Fig. 10. Fig. 12 is a detail top plan View of a modified form of fastening between the ends of the levers. Fig. 13 is a detail top plan view of the levers showing still another type of fastening between the ends of the levers. Figs. 14, 15 and 16 are, respectively a top plan, an end and a front elevation of the hand lever fulcrum.
The reference numeral 1 designates a car, broken away, 2, the draw bar, 3 the coupler lock pin and 4 the end sill.
In carrying out my invention it. will be understood that I do not limit myself to the exact; application of the fulcrums as show-n. as this is governed. to a great extent, by the design oifthe car. i
I he pin lever fulcrum 5 has an integral base 6 which is secured to the end sill by means of the rivets 7 as more clearly shown in Fig. 7. The fulcrum 5 has at its outer end an elongated bearing 8 terminating in a shoulder and a screw threaded portion on which the washer 9 is secured by means of the nut 10, the washer bearing against said shoulder.
The fulcrum 11 for the hand operated lever is provided with an integral bracket 12 which is secured by means of the rivets 13 i (one only being shown) to the base flange of the channel end sill.
Patented Aug. 24, 1915.
14 is a washer and 15 a nut on the outer end of the bolt 16, said bolt passing through one legof the bracket and through the fulcrum. r
The hand lever 17 is pivotally mounted on the. fulcrum 11 and secured thereon by means of the washer-14, bolt 16 and nut 15: the outer portion 18 of the hand lever 17 is offset forwardly from the remainder thereof and when in operative positionon the car is beneath the plane of the'under face of the car as clearly shown: theinner portion of the head Fever; 1? Ts deflected upwardly at an angle to the remainder and terminates in an elongated bearing pin 19 having an offset eiad-fllseiving as a stop to retain the lever 21 on the bearing pin 19. Th1s hearing 19 extends forwardly from the car when the lever is secured to the car.
fulcrum 5 heretofore described in detail.
connected with the locking pin 3 as shown. The outer end portion of the pin lever 21 is,
1n the preferred form, provided with an elongated slot 22, in which the bearing pin 19, of the hand lever, is journaled or positioned, so that when the hand lever is pulled upward, its inner end is swung downward and by reason of the independent fulcrums of the two levers and the pin and slot connection between said levers, an upward movement of the inner end of the pin lever In Figs. 10 and 11 I have shown the outer end of the pin lever 23 and the inner end of the hand lever 24 connected together by means of the bolt and nut 25 there being a its ends, on the elongated bearing 8 of the.
vlhe inner end of the lever is operatively slot 25" in one of the levers indicated by dotted lines whereby apin and slot connection is formed between the levers. In Fig. 12 I the bearing 26 of the hand lever 27 prohave shown the outer end of 6 be provided with the beari 1'' end o the car, I
bearing on the hand operated lever on whlch vided with a nut 28 threaded thereon, said nut acting as a stop to retain the pin lever '29 on said bearing.
As shown in Fig. 13 the in lever 30 may I g pin 31 and the hand lever 33 provided with the elongated slot 32, to provide the pm and slot connec- 'tion" between the two levers.
I claim If '1. In a release rigging for car couplers,'a-
vertically movable pin operating lever pivote'd to a car intermediate its length to provide bodily movement thereof to and from said'ear, of a hand operated lever pivoted intermediate its length to a car, and a connection between the adjacent ends of said levers, said connection providing an elongated pivotal bearing of one of saidlevers on the v .outer of said levers,'whereby said bodily 2- movement of said pin lever is permitted.
2. In an uncoupling rigging for car couplers, a hand operated lever pivoted intertmediate its ends on the end of car, a pin lifting lever pivoted intermediate its ends Q on the 'end of the car, an elongated pivotal bearin for said pin lever, secured on the and an elongated pivotal the outer end of the pin lever is mounted whereby the pin lever is free to move bodily toward and away from the car to accommodate the movement of the coupler in bufiing anddraft. f '3. 'In anuncoupling rigging for car canmounted,
plers, the combination with a pin lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends, on the end of a car, of a hand operated lever independently pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the end of the car, the inner end thereof being deflected upwardly to the 40 plane of the pin lever with which it has a. pin and slot connection, the outer portion of the hand lever being out ofthe plane of the remaining portion and saggingdownwardly and forwardly, anddisposed, when not in operation, beneath the plane of the under face of the car, and adapted to be moved upwardly to operate the pin lever.
4. In an uncoupling riggirig for car couplers, a hand operated lever pivotally intermediate its entls, on the end of a car, and having its inner portion terminating in an elongated pivotal bearing for a pin lever, an elongated pivotal bearing secured to the end of a car, a pin lever p1v- 5'5 ing on the hand lever is journaled, whereby the pin lever may move bodily with the coupler in bufiing and draft. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
