AITORNEYS Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES MURRAY A. WACI-IS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CORNER CLIP.
Application filed May 6, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MURRAY A. VAGHS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invent-ed a new and Improved Corner Clip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in corner clips employed to reinforce corners of pocket-books, wallets and the like and to enh ance the ornamental appearance thereof, and has for one of its objects to provide a corner clip which is so constructed as to facilitate its attachment to a pocket-book or like article and be prevented, during such attachment, from becoming wrinkled or otherwise distorted.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates preferred embodiments of the inventive idea.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of one form of the clip as applied to the corner of a pocket-book or like article;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is an edge elevation showing the material to which the clip is to be attached in section; V
Figure 4 is a section on the line H of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a. section on the line 5-5 of Figure 2;
Figures 6 to 10 are views similar to Figures 1 to 5, respectively, showing a slightly different form of the invention, Figures 9 and 10 being taken on the section lines 9-9 and 101O of Figures 6 and 7; and
Figures 11 to 15 are views similar to Figures 1 to 5, respectively, illustrating another slightly different form of the invention, Fig ures 14 and 15 being taken on the lines 14r1'-1: and 15-15 of Figures 11 and 12.
Corner clips as now manufactured are bent into channel formation and one of the flanges thereof is arranged at an angle to the other flange throughout its entire area and provided with various forms of projections which, when the clip is attached to a piece of material, such as the corner of a pocket-book or the like, are embedded in said material of the pocket-book to secure the clip in place. The flange which is inclined and which carries the projections is spaced sufficiently from Serial No. 711,404.
the other flange of the clip to permit of the clip being readily mounted upon the corner before the first-named flange is bent down toward the other flange and into engagement with the pocket-book. It has been found in practice that when the entire, flange is inclined as: describedconsiderable difficulty is experienced in bending said flange downwardly into substantially parallel relation to the other flange and in engagement with the pocket-book without wrinkling the flange being bent. This flange is usually bent down by means of a punch which engages the flange and} the pressure upon the latter is such that the material of the flange very often becomes wrinkled adjacent the corner of the clip.
The present invention is designed to over come this difliculty and to this end the corner clip, which may be formed of any suitable light metal, consists of portions 16 angularly disposed relative to each other and bent transversely into channel formation to provide bottom and top flanges 17 and 18 between which a corner 19 of a pocket-book or other like article is capable of being inserted preparatory to the attachment of the clip thereto. Preferably the flange which is uppermost When being attached to the corner is provided adjacent its extremities with pro jeotions designed to be embedded in the material of the corner to which the clip is being attached. As shown in Figures 1 to 5 the flanges 18 are struck inwardly adjacent their ends to provide the projections 20. In Figures 6 to 10 these projections take the form of prongs 21, while in Figures 11 to 15 the proj ections are shown as consisting of elongated flanges 22 extended for av major port-ion of the length of the flanges 18.
As shown in the drawing the end portions 23 of each of the flanges 18 is bent outwardly in inclined relation with respect to the flanges 17 and to the remaining portions of the flanges 18. The degree of bend of the end portions 23 is such that the distance between the free extremities of the projections 20, 21 and 22 and the flanges 17 is at least equal to the thickness of the piece of material 19 so that said projections will not interfere with the insertion of the element 19 into the channel formed by the flanges 17 and 18 previous to the clip being attached to the material. After the clip has been properly positioned the end portions 23 may be readily bent downwardly into substantially parallel relation with the remaining portions of the flanges 18 and with the flanges 17 so as to embed the projections in the material 19 and thus secure the clip in place. It will be apparent that by reason of the fact that only the end portions of the flanges 18 are bent outwardly the operation of securing the clip in place by simply bending the end portions will avoid the possibility of any parts of the flanges 18 becoming wrinkled or otherwise distorted since the only pressure required will be di rectly upon said end portions 23.
hat is claimed is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a corner clip for pocket-books and the like bent into channel formation to provide flanges for receiving an edge of a pocket book therebetween, one of said flanges hav ing a projection adjacent one end extending toward the other flange, and "the first-named flange being bent away from the secondnamed flange until adjacent said projection so as to space the free extremity of said projec'tion a distance from the second-named flange at least equal to the thickness of said edge of the pocket-book.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a corner clip for pocket-books and the like bent into channel formation to provide side flanges the portions of which between their extremities are arranged in parallel relation and capable of receiving an edge of a pocket-book therebetween, and the ex treinities of one of said flanges being bent at an angle to the remaining portion thereof and away from the other flange, and said bent extremities having projections extending toward said other flange and between which projections and the latter flange said edge is also capable of being inserted.
3.21s a new article of manufacture a corner clip for pocket-books and the like including angularly arranged portions bent into channel formation to provide opposed flanges for receiving the corner of a pocketbook therebetween, and the extremities only of one of said flanges being bent outwardly away from the other flange and in inclined re ation to the remaining portion of the firstnamed flange.
4:. As a new article of manufacture, a corner clip for pocket-books and the like including angularly arranged portions bent into channel formation to provide opposed flanges for receiving the corner of a pocketbook therebetween, and the extremities only of one said flanges being bent outwardly away from th other flange and in inclined relation to the remaining portion of the lirst-na1ned flange, and said bent extremities having projections the free ends of which are spaced suthciently from said other flange to permit of the insertion of said corner between the latter flange and said projections.
