To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, BERNARD OLBERDING, a citizen of t-he United States, residing at Baileyville, in the county State of Kansas, have invented certain ,new and useful Improvements in Gun Cleaning and Oiling Rods, a specification. l

This invention has reference to improvements in guncleaning and oiling rods and its object is to provide a collapsible rod which may be extended to a suitable length for cleaning and oiling the interiors of gun barrels.

. In order to effect the cleaning and oiling operations, there is provided atelescoping rod vor tube made up o f asuitable number of sections telescoping one into theA other and provided with means whereby the' rods may be drawn out and locked in the extended position so that a washer of suitable ma-A terial may be mounted in one end of the ex` tended rod to bemoved into and out of the gun barrel and remove any accumulations from within the gun barrel.

In order to facilitate the cleaning operathe washer employed maybe made of felt or like material' capable of absorbing oil or the like, whereby the introduction of the oil by the washer will cause a spreading of the oil and its deposition upon the inner walls of the gun barrel being cleansed.

At one end of the implement there is provided a housing or socket Ain which is located a removable holder for a plurality of thefelt washers, whereby there is always present in' the '.holder, such feltl washers `as are needful forthe operation.

The means for holding the cleaning and oiling implement `in theV extended positionv is not confined to any of Nemaha and' of which the following is with the understanding .to the showing ofthe4 features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims. l f

Referring to the drawings, there is shown al telescop'ing'rod'l made up of a plurality of sections-2 shown in the drawings as three in number, but it is to be understood t'hat the number of sections may he greater or less than three, as desired.

The sections of the rod are made of sheet metal of suitable gage and of suitable diameter to telescope one into the other in succession. Each section may increase proporl tionately in size from'the forward end to the butt end of the cleaning implement and each section is connected to the next larger section by means of a catch 3, which, while not necessarily so, may resemble a spring catch sudhasl is employed in connection with y Jlocated a plug 4 having an internal screwl threaded socket 5 for receiving an externally threaded stem forfthis stem may be otherwisel constructed than shown.

-The steml 6 carries a shouldered eXpansion 7 constituting an abutment for a washer 8,and the-stem vhas an axialextension 9 which is alsoexternally screw threaded.

Adapted to the surface stem 9 is a nut`10 which, when the washer 8 and nut 10 are applied to the stem 9, serve to clamp the felt or other like washer 8 firmly in position.

The butt end of the cleaning and oiling yrod is seated in a handle 11, to which'it may be firmly secured.

The handle 11 is formed at its rear end with a pocket 12 of appropriate lengthanf vsize to receive and hold a stack 13 of felt or like washers. p Preferably the stack of washers 13 is composed of numerous washers 'of various sizes for dierent purposes, and the showing in Fig. 2 is intended to represent such a com osite stack of washers so as to` be applied to different uses as may be desired.

When it is desired to use the gun cleaning and oiling rod, the plug 14 is removed to give access to thewashers 13, one or more of which may be removed as deemed necessary. Then the nut 10 is removed and a washer 8 is placed on the stem 9 and the so as to hold the washer in place.

Now a sufficient amount of oil is placed upon the washer so that when the rod with l the washer is introduced into a gun barrel,

, the oil may be.distributed in the. bore ofA the gun, cleaning such ,bore'and at the same time coating it with oil.

The cleaning and oiling rod is then drawnv outwardly either to its full extent or partially thereto and the sections are made to engage one in the other by the-` lock. y

When the cleaningis finished the sect-ions 2 or part of vthem may be telescoped together land the whole Vrod collapsed to its shortest length. p

The device is of extreme simplicity and oit" such cheap construction that it may be manufactured at small cost. Also the felt washers are of such cheap 'construction that into place or its removal from the tion, and a plug they may be discarded and replaced by new washers at any time desired.

l What is claimed is: v.

1. A gun cleaning and oiling rod comprising a hollow handle with a. closure at one end, a telescoping hollow rod with coacting catches at the meeting ends to hold the rod in either the extended or contracted condiat the, outer end of the smaller extremity of the small section of the rod, having an internal screw thread and a screw stemwith a shouldered expansion, and a nut applied thereto to clamp a cleaning washer to the plug.

A gun cleaning and oiling rod compris,- ing a-handle provided with a packet, a removable closure for said pocket, a telescopic hollow rod connected with the handle and having the sections thereof providedxwith vcoacting catches at lthe meeting ends to maintain the rod tracted posit-ion, a plug at the outer end of tht-smaller section of said rod and provided with means for supporting and positioning ditferent'size cleaning elements, and means for detachably securing `a cleaning element to said supporting and positioning means.
