Patented Nov. 2, 1926.
UNITED STATES LAWRENCE B. JONES, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA..
GUN BARREL.
Application led March 19, 1926.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in guns, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby a shot-gun barrel can be increased in length to increase the range of the gun.
rlhis invention also consists in `certain other .features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the ser eral parts, to be hereinafter fully described. illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had' to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which z- Figure l is an elevation of a gun showing my improvement thereon.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view.
Figure 3 is a View of the end of the barrel of the gun.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through the extension which is to be threaded on to the threaded part of the barrel.
Figure 5 is an elevation, with parts broken away, showing a double barrel gun supplied with the improvement.
Figure 6 is a plan view of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a view of the muzzle end of the gun shown in Figures 5 and 6, with the extension removed.
Figure 8 is a View of the extension shown in Figures 5 and 6.
Figure 9 is a detail view of a double barrel shotgun with but one barrel provided with the extension.
Figure 10 is a view of the muzzle end ot' said gun, with the extension removed.
Figure 11 is a view of the rear end ot the extension shown in Figure 9.
In Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4, the barrel 1 ot the gun is provided with an externally threaded muzzle part 2 which begins at an annular enlargement 3 of the barrel, the rear part of the enlargement being beveled, while its 'front face is straight. This enlargement carries the sight 4. The extension for making the gun a long range gun is shown at 5 and the rear part of the bore .of said extension is enlarged and of cylindrical shape and provided with the threads 6 so that it can receive the threaded part 2 and when the extension is screwed home on the barrel, its rear end, which is slightly Serial N0. 95,968.
enlarged as shown at 7, will abut the trent face of the enlargement 3, while the front end of the part 2 of the barrel will abut a shoulder 8 formed at the junction of the threaded part G of the bore7 with the rest of the bore. lThe major portion of the bore of the extension tapers from the part 6 to the muzzle end so as to provide a choke bore.
vWith this extension, a short range gun can be changed into a long range one by simply screwing the extension on to the barrel ot' the gun. Thus it is not necessary to have a number of barrels for converting a short range gun into a long range one or vice versa. The extension can be easily carried on the person, as it will be of light w ight.
Figures 5, 6. Y and 8 show an extension .5 for a double barrel gun l. In this case, the double barrel extension 5 is provided with a pair of rearwardly extending rod like projections 9 for engaging holes l0 formed in the web 11 which is placed between the barrels of the gun. A cam lock lever 12 is pivotally arranged on the lower part of the web and operates through a hole 13 for engaging the loweiI projection 9 to hold the extension in place. As will be seen from the drawings7 the projections 9 extend a considerable distance along the upper and lower parts of the double barrel extension and form ribs 9 so that the projections are irmly connected with the extension.
In this case, both barrels of the gun are extended when the device is placed thereon.
Figures 9, 10 and 11 show a modification in which an extension 5 having but a sin-y gle barrel can be used, with either of the barrels of a double barrel shot-gun. The shot-gun is provided with the openings 10 as before explained, and the extension 5 has an enlargement 14 at one side thereof which carries the rod-like projections 9 for engaging the holes 10. These. parts are so arranged that the extension can be placed in front of either barrel ot the shot-gun, with the rods 9 engaging the holes lu so that either barrel oic the shot-gun can be extended. Any suitable means can be used for holding the extension on the gun.
It is thought from the Jioregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readilv apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
'Vhat I claim isz- In combination with a doble barrel sl1otgun having holes in the muzzle end of the Web of the gun, an extension, projections on the extension for engaging the holes and means lor fastening the projections in the 10 holes.
In testimony Whereoi:l alx my signal' ture.'
