EDGAR J. BLOOM, OF IIFIE IN, OHIO. i
PACKING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17 1912..
Application filed January 21, 1911. Serial No. 603,790.
--To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR J. BLO OM, l-
citizen of the United States, residing at Tiflin, county of Seneca, State of Ohio, have 5, lnvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Packing, anddeclarethe following td-be a full, clear, and exact description. of
v the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acadapted to hold a bolt securely in the irregular seat attachment holes of an earthenware bowl, 'for the purpose of securing to the bowl 'the standard that forms part of the hinge for the seat. i
the location of the parts. Fig. 2, is a sectional elevation showlng a pair of packing devices and their relation with the standard after packing devices are expanded. Fig.
'3, is a sectional elevation showing devices as in Fig. 2 before the packing devices are expanded. Fig. l, is a perspective of the packing; Fig. 5, a sectional elevation of the packing; Fig. 6, a perspective of the conical plug used in connection with the packing.
The packing comprises two members of which the outer is made of soft metal, preferably lead, and is made as a disk 1, with a "split tubular projection 2 that enters the ,hole 3 in the earthenware. The split tubular projection 2 is conically bored for a part of its distance on the inside, and is cylindricalv or substantiallycylindrical on the 40 outside. -That end ofthetubular projec-- tion' which is distant from the disk is smaller in its internal bore than the end which is at' the disk and at this small end the bore of the tube continues of equal diameter from the end of the conical bore to the end of the tube from ato Z).
A'plug- 4: conical on its external surface and bored with a cylindrical bore engages in the bore of the outer member. The small 59 end 6 of the plug is of an external diameter to equal the bore of the outer member at the point I) so that when the plug is forced into the outer member to bring its point 6 beyond the-point Z), the tube is spread; the tube approximately fits the hole in the earthenware; the bore of the plug 4 fits the stem ofthehinge post 7. Two packing devices are inserted in the hole one from above and .one from below, The expander plugs 4 are.
inserted from above and below, the stern of the hinge'post is inserted through both plu s and the plugs are drawn in by means of t e nut 8 on the stem of the standard 7. The plugs 4: expand the soft metal which is capable of expansion, not only because of its soft character but also because of the splits 9 in the tubular part of the packing, which splits 9 may be any desired number.
What'I claim is 1. A packing comprising a disk member, a tubular member projecting centrally therefrom, the said tubular member being bored with a conical bore extending partially therethrough and with a cylindrical bore continuing said conical bore and extending through the remaining part thereof, combined with a conical expander member, substantially as described.
2. A boltand packing therefor, in combination, a bolt enlarged at 'one end and threaded at the other end, a pair of split tubes located on said bolt and pro-' vided with tapering interiors, the tapering of the tubes being toward each other, two spreading plugs engaging about the bolt and having peripheral portions tapering havin toward. each other, one of the plugs being adjacent the enlarged end of the bolt and engaging the taperedportion of the adjacent split tube and the other plug being adjacent the. opposite end of the bolt and engaging the interior tapering portion of the other split tube and aunt adapted to be inserted on the end of the'bolt opposite the enlarged end and adapted, when runalong the bolt, to draw the spreading plugs to-,
- ward each other and thereby spread the split tubes, substantially asand for the purposes set forth.
3. A bolt and packing therefor, having in combination, a bolt enlarged at one end and a threaded at the other end, a pair of split tubes, each tube provided with an annular flange adapted to seat on the surface of the member through which the bolt is passed, said split tubes being located on said bolt and provided with tapering interiors, the taper ing being toward each other, two spreading plugs engaging about the bolt and having their tapering portions tapering toward each other, one of the plugs being adjacent the enlarged end of the bolt and engaging with the tapering portion of the adjacent other and spread the split tubes, thereby-,-.10 split'tube and the other plu being adjacent providing a packing for the bolt, snbstanthe opposite end of the b0 t and engaging tially as described. the interior tapering portion of the other; In testimony whereof, I sign this speci- 5 splittube and a nut running on the end offication in the presence of. two witnesses.
