UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUELADLAM, JR., OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,161, dated June 1, 1880.
Application led December 10, 1879.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL ADLAM, Jr., of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Hose-Couplin gs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in Which- Figurel is an elevation of a piece of hose having my improved coupling applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the view of one of my couplings.
Couplings have heretofore been attached to hosev by inserting the neck or thimble Within the end of the hose and securing it in place by a suitable clamping-strap applied to the ontside of the hose or by Wire Wound around the same. These methods are, however, expensive, and require the exercise of considerable care and skill, While, `should theinterior of the hose be of slightly greater diameter than the neck ofthe coupling inserted within it, as sometimes occurs, it is often found difficult to make t-he joint sufficiently tight to prevent leakage.
My invention has for its object to avoid these objections `and dispense with an outside clamping device 5 and it consists in a coupling having its neck or thilnble divided by longitudinal slits into sections, which are expanded by a suitable instrument after being inserted within the hose, and thereby forced tightly j against its interior surface in such a manner as to cause the coupling to be securely conned in place, and at the same time insure a perfectly water-tight joint.
To enable others skilled in the art tounderj stand and use my invention, I will proceed to Fig. 3 is a perspective of casting; but they may be produced bysawing, or otherwise, after the coupling has been cast, if desired; and at the termination of each .slit is a circular aperture, c., which prevents the cracking or breaking away of the metal when the neck ais expanded, as will be hereinafter described.
After the neck a has been placed within the end of the hose a suitable instrument is inserted within the coupling for the purpose ot' separating the sections of the neck a and forcibly expanding them against'the inside ot' the hose, as seen in Fig.2; and when the sections are thus expanded the coupling is held securely in place and a perfectly Water-tight joint insured. y
By the employmentof a coupling constructed -and applied to hose as above described an outside clamping deviceis entirely dispensed with, thus affording a heater finish and reducing the cost to a minimum. Moreover, my im-` proved coupling is strong, durable, and effective, can be easily applied Without the employment of skilled labor, and will effectuall y prevent leakage at the joints.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hose-coupling, B, having its neck or thimble a divided by longitudinal slits b into sections adapted to be expanded against the interior surface of the hose to which it is applied, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
W'itness my hand this 5th day of December,
SAMUEL ADLAM, JR.
In presence of P. E. TEscHEMAcHER, W. J. CAMBRIDGE.
