Description

Dec. 10, 1929. M. B. METZGER' I 1,738,601
GUN CLEANER Filed Oct. 27, 1928 INVE T WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 10, 1929 uNrrs MERRITT B. METZGEB, F ALVAIDA, OHIO GUN CLEANER Application filed October 27, 1928. Serial No. 315,544.
My present invention has reference to an instrument for cleaning the barrels of shot guns or the like. My primary object is the provision of an instrument for this purpose which can be readily inserted in the barrel of a gun, moved to desired positions therein and wherein the cleaning element in its movement through the barrel will be expanded at desired intervals sothat the barrel will be effectively cleaned without any metal touching the bore thereof.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement, with the expansible wadding arranged in a gun barrel.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the improvement, parts being in section.
In carrying out my inventionI make use of a metal tube 1 which, at its outer end has secured thereon a substantially U-shaped handle 2. The tube 1 is of a slightly less length than the gun barrel 3 in whose bore the instrument is inserted.
Guided freely through the tubular member 1 there is a rod 4 of strong wire. This rod has its outer end merging into a sub stantially U-shaped head 5 which is received in and which is normally out of contact with the head 2 of the tube 1. The second end of the rod projects a suitable distance beyond the tube 1 and has slidably arranged thereon two spaced washers 6 and 7 between which there are discs 8 of compressible and likewise expansible fabric such as gun wadding, felt or the like. There is screwed on the outer end of the rod 4: a nut 9.
The improvement is inserted in the bore of the barrel 3 and the handle 5 is drawn toward the outer end of the handle 2. This first causes the lower washer 7 to contact with the discs 8, and thereafter causes the upper disc to contact with the upper washer to force the same against the lower or outer end of the tube 1 and a further pull upon the handle 5 will expand the compressible discs 8 to cause the same to be brought into wiping engagement with the bore of the barrel 3 and effectively clean the barrel. This operation is continued until the bore of the barrel is thoroughly cleaned.
The construction is extremely simple, may be cheaply manufactured, easily operated and will not permit any of the metal parts of the device contacting with the bore of the barrel. Having described the invention, I claim: An instrument for cleaning gun barrels, comprising a tubular member having a substantially U-shaped handle at one end thereof, a rod freely guided through the tubular member and having a substantially U-shaped handle end which is received in the first mentioned handle, the opposite end of the rod projecting through the tube, spaced discs on the rod, means holding the outer disc thereon, and a series of compressible discs arranged between the first mentioned discs for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
MERRITT B. METZGER.
