1,526,053 PATENT FFICE.
JOHN W. COOK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO 3'. EEDXVARD TI-IEBAUD, 0F EHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SECURITY DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application filed September 6, 1823. Serial No. 661,333.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Security Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to security display devices, particularly to show cases or trays for the display of valuable articles, in the show windows of jewelers and others.
Articles so displayed are likely to be stolen by a thief after he has obtained access to the same, by smashing the window pane.
It is the object of this invention to provide a security display device, including a show case or tray, for the display of diamonds or other valuable articles, adapting the device to act to close down and lock the lid to protect the article displayed from being stolen, at the instant the window is broken, and thus thwart the thief in his eiforts.
A further object is to provide a security display device which is adapted, through the agency of the movement of an object, against which part of the device bears, to operate to close and lock the container of the displayed articles, at the instant the object moves, such as the movement of a breaking pane of glass.
Another object is to provide an electrically operated security display device which is adapted, through the agency of the movement of a breaking pane of glass, or other object, to close an electric circuit, effecting the immediate closing and locking of the container, in which the articles are being displayed, and thus prevent the theft.
With these other objects my invention resides in certain construction, one embodiment of which is shown in the drawings, is hereinafter described, and its operation explained, and what I claim is set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a show case constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear end view of the show case. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, partially in section.
The body 5 of the case is a shallow box such as ordinarily used by jewelers and others for the display of small articles of value in store windows. A lid 6 is connected to the body 5 by hinges 7 and 8 are spring catches of any approved make for automatically locking the lid to the body when it is closed down, so that no goods can be removed from it, without unlocking the same. The body is secured to a stationary shelf 9 or other similar support, at a suitable distance from the store window 10.
An electro-magnet 12 is secured to the rear of the show case, and is provided with a pivoted. hooked catch 15 to which an armature 14 is secured. An arm 16 is secured to the lid 6, and when the lid is opened the free end portion of the'arm 16 is slipped under the hook of the catch, when the armature. is clear of the core of the electro-inagnet. A. strong spring 18 is secured'to the body 5, at the rear thereof, and when the lid is raised, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the spring is bent backward by the lid.
- A stationary contact piece 20 is secured at a predetermined distance from the window, and a. spring contact piece 21 is secured at its lower part to the stationary contact piece, and is arranged so that its free end portion bears on the glass of the window, at a point beyond the electrical contact points. The spring contact piece is normally clear of the stationary contact piece, to hold the electrical contact points apart. A screw 26 is provided for adjusting the contact pieces relatively to each other and to the glass of the window. An electric battery 24, or other source of electrical energy is provided, and is included in circuit with the electro-magnet, and thetwo contact pieces, by wires 25.
In operation, after relatively setting the contact pieces 20 and 21, for making the de sired contact, when the glass is broken, and also opening previously. the lid 6, catching the arm 16 on the catch 15, then upon any inward movement of the glass, as when. it is smashed in from the outside, the contact pieces 20 and 21 come together, clos- Inasmuch as changes in the details of constructionoit' the one embodiment of my invention herein shown and described, can be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, the invention includes within its purview such changes as fairly come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1, A show case provided with a hinged lid and a closing spring, means for automatically locking the lid when closed, an arm secured to the lid substantially radial otfits hinge, a stationary electro magnet arranged parallel to the hinge, and a hooked catch pivoted crosswise Or the hinge and normally engaging with the said arm and holding the lid open and provided with an armature for the electro-magnet, said arm being retracted to permit the closure of the lid when the electro-magnet is energized.
' '2. A show case provided with a hinged lid and a closing spring, ineans'tor automati cally locking the lid when closed, catch mechanism normally holding the lid open, a stationary electro'magnet which releases the lid from the catch mechanism when ener gized, a stationary contact piece, a spring contact piece adapted to bear against a window and arranged adjacent to the stationary contact piece, and a battery include-d in circuit with the BlGClZTO-KYIZIgIM-Bb and the two contact pieces when the latter are pressed together, thereby eii ecting the closure of the lid.
3. A show case provided with a hinged lid, means for automatically locking the lid when closed, an arm secured to the lid, a pivoted catch for engaging with the said arm when the lid is opened, a spring for automatically closing the lid when the arm is released from the catch, an elcctro-m'agnet secured to the case and provided with an armature on the said catch, a stationary contact piece, a spring contact piece adapted to bear against a window and arranged adjacent to the stationary contact piece, and a battery included in circuit with the electro-magnet, the armature and the two con-o tact-pieces when the latter are pressed together, thereby releasing the arm from the catch and permitting the spring to close the lid.
4. A security display device adapted to operate thru the agency of the movement of an object, comprisin a container, a cover to said container, a closing member adapted to automatically close said cover on said container, means for automatically locking said cover on said container, when closed, a second member for causing said closing member-to close said cover on said container, a third member in bearing contact with said object, and intervening means between said third member and said second member 1, eaaoss for causing said second member to cause said closing member to close said cover on said container, when said object moves said third member.
Ii security display device adapted to operate electrically, in conjunction with the movement or an object, comprising a container for displaying articles, a cover to said container, a closing member adapted to automatically close said cover on said container, means for automatically locking said cover on said container, when closed,
e second member for causing said closing member to close said cover on said container, said second member including a magnet keeper, a agnet for attracting said keeper in actuating said second member, third member having an element in bearing contact with said object, contact points adapted to be brought together by the movement of said eiemcnt,an electric circuit, including an electric energy supply,..connected with said contact points and said magnet, whereby upon a movement of said object, said element causes said circuit to be closed at said contact points, el fecting he closing and locking oi said cover on said container, by said closing member and said means.
6. A securit display device adapted to operate electrically in conjunction with the increment of an object, comprising a container tordisplaying articles, a cover to said container, a closing member adapted to automatically close said cover on said container, locking means for securing said cover on said container when closed, electrically operated means including a circuit and an electric energy supply, for causing .aid closing member to act to close said cover on said container, and a third means in bearing contact with said object, adapted to close said circuit and cause the electrically operated means to effect the closing and locking of said cover on said container. thru the action of said closing member and said locking member, upon the movement of said object.
"I in an electrical y operated display device, including a container for display articles, a cover to said container, and means for closing and locking said cover on said container, a circuit, a circuit closer adapted to close aid circuit while in bearing contact with a moving object, said circuit closer including a lever reaching out from the body of said circuit breaker, to bear against said object, at a point away from the body of said closer, contact points in said circuit, adapted to be brought together by a movement of said lever, caused by the movement oi said object.
in testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature.
JOHN N. COOK.
