Be it known thatwe, CnAR'Lns B KING and EsTEL J; MCCLELLAN, citizens of the United States, residin 'at Logan-gees, in theco'unty of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented ceit'ai'n' new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which theiollowing is a. specification.

It is the object/0t this invention to-provide a glovefand more particularly a warning glove, including a back,- palm, and thumb piece; and in which the usual objectienable seam around the base of the thumb is eliminatedgand in the construction of which the number of operations is i'educed to a m-ini' mum, and an apprec'iable saving" in thtead is eliected.

More particularly it is the object of the invention to provide a thumb iece "for a glove having its base extended laterally at the sidewhich is usually out way, so as to provide a thumb piece having symmetrical sides, in order that the die for cutting said thumb pieces may be used for both right and left hand gloves Without reversing the same;' and so as to also provide a base for the thumb piece ot'a width adapting the same to extend from the center 'seam'o'f the palm ofthe glove, all the way around tothe side edge of the back of the glove; the palm of the 'gloyebeing formed without the usual dependingstrip at its side edge'beyond its thunib'port ion'. By this arrangement it will be seen that the base of the thumb'pie'cemay he stitched directly to the back of the glove to form the side seam, thereby eliminating stitching of said base of the thumb'piece to said usual depending stripofthe palm piece, and then stitching the outer edge of said depending strip to the back of the-glove in 7 order to form the side seam, as-is the practiee in the constructions heretofore employed. As a consequence, the extra seam around the outside of the base of the thtunb, and the extra operation and 'tl'ir'ead necessitated by the stitching of said seam, is eliminated. Q

the thumb piece is placed upon the palm piece as shown in Fig. 2, and the edges of the thumb portions 10 and 14, and the curved edges 12 and 16 are stitched together The inner side edge of the base 15 is also stitched to the edge of the palm piece formed by slit-9, as shown at 18, and the thumb which is thus formed is then turned inside out as shown in Fig. 3, so that the thumb is in its" natural position, with the base 15 extending below the same.

The laterally extended inner side edge of base 15 being thus fixed to the edge of the palm piece formed by slit 9, the outer side edge of base 15, which projects laterally the same distance, will extend across the cutout portion 8 of the palm piece into a'l'ine ment with the side edge 7 thereof, so as to efill in the palm of the glove. 20

The glove is finished by stitching edges 6 and 7 of the palm piece, and the outer side edge of base 15 of the thumb piece, to the edges 2 of the back 1 of the glove, as shown at 19, said stitching being continued around the index and little fingers of the palm, and around the edges of separate finger inserts 20 for the two middle fingers of the glove. The wrist of the glove may be finished in any usual manner, as by binding the same as shown at 21 in Fig. 5. r

i It will be noted that the lateral extension of the base of the thumb piece so that it may be stitched directly to the edge of back 1, without first stitching said base to an intermediate depending side strip of the palm and then stitching said palm strip to the edge of the back, as is the present practice, eliminates the objectionable seam around the outside of the base of the thumb of the glove, and also saves the thread and labor incident to the formation of such an extra seam.

It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as thus described, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

l/Vhat is claimed is:

1. A glove comprising a back, a palm piece provided at its lower edge with a longitudinally extending medial slit inclined at its upper end toward one side edge of said palm piece, the lower portion of said side edge of the palm piece being cut away with the upper edge of said cut-out portion inclined similarly to said inclined end of said medial slit, the portion of said palm piece between said slit and said cut-out por tion forming a depending thumb portion spaced from the side edge of said palm' piece, and a thumb piece having a base projecting laterally at both side edges so as to form a symmetrical structure adapted for either right or left hand gloves, the edges of said thumb piece between the side edges of piece provided at its lower edge with the thumb portion thereof and the side edges of its base being inclined in opposite ing to said upper edge of said cut-out portion of the *palm piece and said upper end of the slit therein, said thumb piece having the edges of the thumb portion thereof and said oppositely inclined edges of the same fixed to the edge of said depending thumb portion of the palm piece to form a thumb for the glove adapted to be turned back upon the palm thereof with the base of the thumb piece positioned at the side edge of said palm below'said thumb, said base extending laterally at its inner side edge to the edge of said palm piece at said slit and extending laterally at'its outer side edge across sald cut-out portion of the palm to the edge of the back of the glove and being stitched thereto, whereby a seam around the base of the thumb and spaced from the edge of the back of the glove is eliminated.

2. A glove comprising back, a palm piece provided at its lower edge with a longitudinally extending medial slit, the lower portion of one side edge of the palm piece being cut away with the upper end of said cut-out portion inclined upwardly and outwardly, the portion of said palm piece between said slit and said cut-out por ion forming a depending thumb portion spaced from the side edge of said palm piece, and a thumb piece having a base provided with a laterally projecting outer side edge, the edge of said thumb piece between a side edge of the thumb portion and said outer side edge of its base being inclined similarly to said upper end of said cut-out portion of the palm piece, said thumb piece'having its side edges between its thumb portion and its base and the side edges of said thumb portion fixed to the edge of said depending portion of the palm piece to form a thumb for the glove adapted to be turned back upon the palm thereof with the base of the thumb piece positioned at the side edge of said palm below said thumb, said base extending laterally at its outer side edge across said cut-out portion of the palm to the edge of the back of the glove and being fired thereto. a

A glove comprising a back, a palm piece forming a depending thumb portion laterally spaced at its outer side edge from the prolongation of the side edge of the palm piece proper, the upper ends of the side edges of said thumb portion being inclined upwardly and outwardly and a thumb piece having a base, the edges of said thumb piece between the side edges of the thumb por tion thereof and the side edges of its base being inclined in opposite directions on lines of curvature corresponding to said upper ends of said side edges of the depending humb portion of the palm piece, said thumb piece having its side edges between its thumb portion and its base and the side edges of said thumb portion fixed to the edges of said depending portion of the palm piece to form a thumb for the glove adapted to be turned back upon the palm thereof, with the base of the thumb piece forming the palm below said thumb and said base of the thumb pieceextending laterally at its outer side edge to the edge of the back of the glove and being fixed thereto.

5. A glove comprising a back, a palm piece forming a depending thumb portion laterally spaced at its outer side edge from the prolongation of the side edge of the palm piece proper, the upper end of the outer side edge of said thumb portion being inclined upwardly and outwardly, and a thumb piece having a base, the edge of said thumb piece between the outer side edge of the thumb portion thereof and the outer side edge of its base being inclined similarly to said upper end of said outer side edge of the depending thumb portion of the palm piece, said thumb piece having its side edges between its thumb portion and its base and the side edges of said thumb portion fixed to the edges of said depending portion of the palm piece to form a thumb for the glove adapted to be turned back upon the palm thereof, with the base of the thumb piece positioned at the side of said palm below said thumb and said base of the thumb piece extending laterally at its outer side edge to the edge of the back of the glove and being fixed thereto.

6. A glove comprising a back, a palm piece having a longitudinally extending cutout portion at one side edge thereof forming a portion of said palm piece spaced from the side edge of the palm and adapted to be turned back upon the palm proper to form the front of the thumb of the glove, the outer side edge of the front of the thumb curving into the side edge of the palm proper at the base of the thumb so as to follow the contour of the edge of the hand between the thumb and index finger, and a thumb piece fixed to the edge of said front of the thumb to form the back of the same and having a depending base forming the portion of the palm of the glove below said thumb and extending laterally at its outer side edge across the cut-out portion of the palm piece to the edge of the back of the glove and being stitched thereto.

7. A glove comprlsing a back, a palm piece forming a depending thumb portion laterally spaced at its outer side edge from the prolongation of the side edge of the pahn piece proper, and a thumb piece provided with a base having equi-distantly, laterally projecting, symmetrical sides whereby said thumb piece is adapted for either right or left hand gloves, said thumb piece having its side edges between its thumb por tion and its base and the side edges of said thumb portion fixed to the edges of said de pending thumb portion of the palm piece to form a thumb for the glove adapted to be turned back upon the palm thereof, With the base of the thumb piece forming the palm below said thumb and said base of the thumb piece extending laterally at its outer side edge to the edge of the back of the glove and being fixed thereto.
