PATENT QFFICE.
EDWIN o. J. LLOYD, or JEANNETTE, rnnnsYLvANIA.
BOX.
Application filed November 7, 1923. Serial No. 673,349.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN C. J. LLOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeannette, in the county of VVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in box lids and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with shoe polish boxes or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character embodying novel and improved means whereby a brush is carried thereby with the head of the brush disposed beyond the periphery of the lid and wherein the applied brush provides means to facilitate the removal of the lid.
It is also an objectof the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the lid is provided thereacross with a. groove or channel in which is engaged the handle of a brush, the insertion of the brush within the groove or channel being limited. to assure the maintenance of the head of the brush to one side of or beyond the periphery of the lid.
T he invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved boX lid whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceeed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is view in top plan illustrating a box lid constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation 'of the structure. as illustrated in Figure 1 with the lid in applied position;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 with the lid applied;
Figure t is a view in top plan of the lid with the brush removed;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in plan of the brush. As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, L denotes a lid adapted to be engaged in a well-known manner with a boX B, said box being of a type adapted to contain shoe polish or-the like. The lid has disposed radially thereacross agroove or channel 1 having its opposite ends open and having its side walls arcuate in cross section to provide ways 2 to snugly receive the longitudinal marginal portions of a brush handle H,
whereby said handle is effectively maintained in applied position with respect to the lid L and in a manner whereby the brush can only be entirely separated from the lid L by relative sliding movement of the lid and handle in a direction lengthwise a of the handle.
The handle H is hollow but of a flattened type and is of such dimensions that when the handle H is applied within the groove or channel 1 the handle is entirely confined therein so that no hindrance or obstruction will be offered to the usual packing for shipment.
Carried by one end portion of the handle is the head 3 preferably of bristles, said head being partially inserted within the adjacent end of the handle H and clamped therein by proper beading of the opposed walls of the handle. The portion of the handle H immediately adjacent to the head 3 is transversely enlarged, as at 4, and of a width in excess of the width of the groove or channel 1, said enlarged portion serving to limit the extent of insertion of the handle H within the groove or channel 1 from either end so that when the handle H is in applied position the head 3 will at all times be positioned beyond the periphery of the lid L. By this means, the applied brush may be readily employed in turning or twisting the lid from its box without the necessity of moving or adjusting the handle H relative to the groove or by this means, the head 3 can be employed as a dauber without the necessity of removing the brush from the lid.
In practice, the head 3 being disposed to one side of the lid L does not in any way interfere with the required packing of the box and it is to be particularly noted that channel 1. Also when the brush is in position relative to the lid the head does not at any time come in contact with the box.
By having the head disposed beyond the confines of the lid L, the bristles of the head are prevented from becoming caked and the bristles of the head are fully exposed to the air. This is of advantage by reason of the fact that as the bristles are not pushed into the groove or channel, the oil and other ingredients comprised in the polish or the like readily evaporates, leaving the bristles soft and pliable. On the other hand if the head 3 was confined within the channel or groove 1 the bristles would cake together and harden and thus destroy their usefulness as a brush.
By having the handle H hollow advertisingmatter or the like may be conveniently housed therein whereby the utility of the device from a commercial standpoint is materially increased.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself in any way, as to the manner in which the groove or channel 1 may be formed but at present I prefer to produce the same by the use of proper dies.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a box lid constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated,
and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason i do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. In combinationwith a box lid having a groove disposed thereacross, a brush including a handle and a head, said handle lteing engageable within the groove, the portion of the handle immediately adjacent to the head being enlarged to limit the extent of insertion of the handle within the groove and to maintain the head beyond the confines of the lid.
2. In combination with a box lid having a groove disposed thereacross, a brush including a handle and a head, said handle being engageable within the groove, the portion or" the handle immediately adjacent to the head being enlarged to limit the ten-t ot insertion of the handle within the groove and to maintain the head beyond the confines of the lid, the side marginal portions of the handle and the side walls of the groove interlocking.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
EDWIN C. J. LLOYD.
