Description

Nov. 13 1923. 1,474,271
E. C. J. LLOYD BOX AND ATTACHMENT THEREFOR Filed July 12. 1922 r a B INVENTdR ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 13, 1923.
STATES ean EDWIN C. J. LLOYD, OF EANNETTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOX AND ATTACHMENT THEREFOR.
Application filed July 12,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN C. J. LLoxn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeannette, in the county of lVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes and Attachments Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boxes and attachments for the same, and more particularly to a shoe polish box and a brush adapted to be carried by the box so as to be readily available for use.
This invention is intended more particularly as an improvement. over the boxes and attachments disclosed in my United States Patent 1,373,622 and in my co-pending Patent 1,423,442, the application for which was filed August 31, 1920. The primary object of the present. invention is to simplify the constructions disclosed in my above identified patent and application and to provide a box which may be made at small cost in combination with a brush. the box being adapted to receive the brush and the brush and the box being so related as to prevent polish from getting on the box off of the brush. A. further object is to provide a brush and a box so related that both the brush and box may be manufactured at very small cost. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of the brush and box, showing the brush in normal position;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the brush;
Figure 3 is an elevation of the box and brush;
Figure 4 is an elevation brush taken in a plane at Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a plan view of a modified form of brush.
Box B is of a known construction being similar to a tyne of polish box now commonly in use... this box including a lower section 7) provided with a. bead b which acts as a stop element for the lower edge of an upper section or cover 1. In carrying my invention into effect a channel 2 is pressed in cover 1 and extends diametrically thereof. This channel is provided in each side wall with an arcuate groove 3 and the botoi the box and right angles to 192-2. Serial No. 574,485.
tom 4 of the channel is of arcuate shape and.
extends an appreciable distance below grooves 3. Grooves 3 receive the lateral edge portions of a brush 5 which is formed of sheet metal, this brush being of flattened elliptical shape in cross-section. Head 5 of the brush is reduced in width and receives the bristles 5", the bristles being disposed substantially in the plane of the brush. By providing channel 2 with the arcuate bottom 4 the bristles 5 when the brush is in posi tion in the channel, are held out of contact with the bottom of the channel. As will be noted more clearly from Figures 1 and 4 the bristles 5 are of less width than the opening at the topof channel 2, so that these bristles do not contact with the lateral walls of the brush, and the tapered portion 5 of the head facilitates insertion of the brush into grooves 3 of the channel. As the brush is formed of sheet metal and is of flattened elliptical cross-section, it may be made to fit snugly into grooves 3 so as to be held frictionally in position thus eliminating possibility of the brush becoming accidentally detached from the cover.
When it is desired to use the polish, the box may be readily opened by sliding brush 5 outwardly a sufficient distance beyond cover ,1 to permit the brush to be readily grasped, in which position the brush may be utilized as a lever for applying pressure to the cover for removing the same. After this has been done the brush may be removed from the cover and used for applying the polish, after which thebrush is replaced in grooves 3 of channel 2 and the cover may be secured on the box. As the channel 2 of the cover is of uniform cross-section throughout its length this channel may be readily formed by means of a drawdie, and the brush may be produced at very small cost by forming from sheet metal, bristles 5 being secured in the head 5 in any known or preferred manner. This renders it ossible to produce a box and a brush which can be readily carried by the box and used for.
opening the same, at very small cost so as to be readily available to all members of the traveling public.
When manufacturing the device in. large quantities I prefer to use the form of brush illustrated in Figure 5. which is of uniform width throughout its length as this eliminates tapering of the head of the brush and efli-ects a material saving in cost of production.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a boX including a lower Section and a cover removably secured thereon, said cover being provided with a channel having a longitudinally ex tending groove in each side, a brush fitting into said grooves so as to be readily slid into and out of the channel, the bristles of the brush being disposed substantially in the lane of the body of the brush and the bottom of the channel being disposed below said grooves.
2; In combination with a box including a lower section and a cover removably secured thereon, said cover being provided with a transversely extending channel of uniform cross-section, the channel being provided in each lateral wall with a longitudinally extending groove and the bottom of the channel being below said grooves, a brush including a body portion fitting into said grooves and tapered at one end to form a head. and bristles secured in said head, the bristles being disposed substantially in the plane of the head and within the lateral faces thereof, the tapered head facilitating insertion of the brush into said channel.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
EDWIN C. J. LLOYD.
