Description

H. BROWN COMBINED LOCK AND LATCH Filed Aug. 23, 1925 Harold Bron w flbmnzg Patented Feb. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFIE.
HAROLD BROWN, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR T0 PETER NORDWALL, OF
KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
COMBINED LOCK LAND LATCH.
Application filed August 23, 1923.
To all whom 2'22 may concern:
Be it known that HAROLD BROWN, citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of VVyandotte and State of Kansas, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Locks and Latches; and he does hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined lock and latch which will be so constructed that when the same is set it will be impossible 1.3 for a key to be inserted into the look from the outside of the door to withdraw the key bolt of the said lock.
An object of the invention is to provide an element for automatically controlling the latch bolt, closing the key hole in the look so that a key cannot be inserted until the latch bolt is manually retracted to inoperative position by s'aid element, which at the same time uncovers the key hole.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined lock and latch which will be springless and which will be highly eflicient in use and quite inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects will appear as the descrip tion proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of my apphcation,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved lock and latch, showing one cover plate for the same removed and the several elements in locked position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view as illustrated in the Fig. 1, but showing the several elements in the unlatched position.
Fig. 3 is a side elev'ation of my improved lock and latch with one cover plate removed, showing the several elements spaced apart to bring out the overlapping relation of the weight and guard members.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the lme 4l4., Fig. 3.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
I employ the usual form of lock case 1, which is provided with the several spaced Serial No. 659,021.
key 6, the operation of which will be here inafter described. A notch 7 is cut in the lower side of the key bolt '3 and is adapted to cooperate with the said key' 6 to' slide the bolt forwardly and rearwardly.
A latch bolt 8 is mounted in the upper portion of the case 1 and is automatically held in outward position by means of the weight 9 which is loosely mounted on the hub 10 which is journaled in the sides of the case, and which is provided with an inner portion 11, which in turn is perfectly connected with the rear end of the latch barby means of the pin 12.
Guard member 13 is affixed to the hub 10 and turns therewith when the spindle 14. for the knobs 15 is in position. The upper and outer corners of the weight and guard member are notched as at 16 and 17 and are adapted to cooperate with the head or latched portion of the latch bolt 8 when the same is in extended position.
A combined cam 18 and detent 19 are formed integrally and are rotatably mounted on the shaft or pin 20 which is positioned between the side plates of the lock case. An operating knob 21 is adapted to be passed through an opening in the inner side plate of the lock case and to engage theshaft of pin 20 so that the cam and detent may be manually rot'ated. The several elements of the lock are shown in locked position in Fig. 1 of the drawings and the detent 19 is shown in engagement with the shoulder 22 on the lower and inner end of the weight member 9. The weight member is furthermore notched out as at 23 and is adapted to cooperate with the dam 18 so that when the same is rotated the said weight and guard members will beraised together until they assume the position as best illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings whereupon the detent will contact with the stop pin 24: and the guard member 13 will be withdrawn from over the key hole 25 so that the key 6 may be placedtherein and turned to withdraw the key bolt, thereby unlocking the door. WVhen the cam 18 and detent 19 are in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings it will be impossible to turn the door knobs 15' to unlatch the door,
but as soon as the cam and detent are turned to the position in Fig. 2 of the drawings the door knobs may be turned to raise the Weight and guard members and also retract the latch bolt.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided an improved combined lock and latch which will be positively burglar proof as long as the cam and detent are in position as illustrated in Fig.
.1 of the drawings, thereby locking the guard -member over the key hole,.thereby preventing the inserting of a key into the s'ame from the outside of-the door. Many minor changes in detail of description may be re- .sorted to Without departure from the spirit ofthe invention.
Having thus described my invention what said Weight, a key bolt slidably mounted in said case and being provided with means to limit its inward and outward movement and an integrally formed cam and detent adapted to cooperate with said Weight to permit of the movement ofthe several elements or to hold the same in locked position substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described,
comprising a combination as claimed in claim 1, a removable manually operated means for operating said integrally formed cam and detent.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
HAROLD BROWN.
