IMPROVEMENT IN UTERINE SUPPORTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,448, dated June 23, 1874; application filed March 11, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, JOHN T. WRIGHT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Uterine Supporters, of which the following is a specieation:

The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of cups for uterine supporters; and its object is to make such cup and its standard so flexible and adjustable that it may readily be adapted in form and sha-pe required to the varying position and condition ot'- the uterus. y

Figure l is a perspective of lny improved cup and support. Fig. 2 is an elevation, and Fig. 3 a vertical section, of the same.

Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.

In the drawings, A represents the standard, made of any suitable material, coiled or bent substantially as shown, so that by bending more or straightening the coils the cup sustained by said standard may be lowered or raised, as any condition of the uterus may de mand. Upon the top of this standard,and t0 it, are secured thel springs a, which should be stiff enough to perlorm their functions, and of sufficient flexibility to allow any desirable adjustability in enlarging or contracting the cup, so as to fit any size or diseased condition of the uterus. To the top of these springs are secured the leaves b, each leaf being a segment of a circle, and so shaped and attached that when compressed they form a ring, cut into segments, which can be distended or contracted to or from a central point. These leaves may be made of any suitable material.

Bis another and larger leaf, which may be taken oif or put on, one or more, on any side, as the nature of the case may require, for anteversion or retroversion, or any flexion. At the lower end ot' this leaf it is provided with one or more hooks, c, which engage with the lower end of the leaves b, and it is also provided with other hooks, d, which engage with the top of said leaves b, and keep it in place. It may be removed by unbending the upper hooks, and secured in place again by compressing' them when the leat'is properly placed.

The materials of which this device is made is immaterial, so long as they are of the proper character to perform the functions herein described, and allow ofthe adjustment speciiied.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A cup for a uterine supporter, made by the combination of the springs a and leaves b, so attached to a standard that said leaves may be distended or contracted to or from a centra-l point, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. A-uterine supporter wherein the standard A, springs a., and leaves b are constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set t'orth.

3. The combination, with the standard A and springs c, of the leaves b and B, the leaf B being larger than the leaves b, all constructed and arranged as described, for the purpose set forth.
