IMPROVEMENT IN PESSARIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,363, dated June 25, 1878; application filed February 23, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES W. DAwsoN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Uterine Supporters, of which the following is a specification:

My improved supporterbelongs to the class wherein the cervix-cup is supported bya stem and a spring-connection to which the stem is hinged, and which reaches to theneighborhood of the abdomen, and is there held by proper straps or other sustaining devices. It also belongs to the class wherein the cervix-cup is adjustable upon its supporting-stem, so as to adapt it for use with difl'erent persons.

Its nature willbefully understood from the description given below, when considered in connection with the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of this specification.

- In said drawing, Figure 1 is a side view, an d Fig.2 a central vertical section, of myimproved pessary. Fig. 3 is a bottom, and Fig. 4 a top, view of the base of a stem, showing a part of the invention.

In said drawing, A represents the cupshaped supporter for the cervix uteri. To increase the surface which supports the parts, a slight roll is given to the upper rim of the cup, as at a.

The cup is supported by a stem composed of the part B, of one piece with the cup and hollow in its lower portion, and the part B, which fits into the hollow in the part B. The part B is also hollow through its entire length to afford a bearing and cover for a screw, B which enters the threaded'portion of the cavity in the part B, as fully appears in Fig. 2. The screw is held'in the'part B by a bead, b upon its plain surface, entering a corresponding groove provided in the sleeve part B. This bead and its corresponding groove may beplaced, if desired, at any other point within the limits of the sleeve. This construction of the parts B, B and B permits the ready adjustment of the cup at different heights without removing them by simply turning the screw B as will be readily understood. A thumb-piece, s, is provided upon the lower end of the screw to facilitate this operation.

The spring or bow O, which forms the connection between the supporting-band at the abdomen and the pessary proper, is of the ordinary construction, and divided or open at the point of the bend c. The hinge between this spring and the stem of the pessary is at d, which, as will be observed, is under the broad base I), provided upon the extremity of the part B My object in making this base thus large is so that it may entirely cover both the hinge and the screw, and thus prevent rupture to the flesh by contact therewith.

Another feature of my invention has for its object the prevention of any turning of the cup after insertion, to which it is very liable in supporters which are adjusted by means of a screw. This is a serious evil, as the cup may become turned so as to incline the wrong way; and in that class of supporters wherein the male part of the screw is upon the surface of the standard, corresponding in other support ers to the part B in my invention, this result is of frequent occurrence. To obviate it, I construct the part B and the hollow of the part B, wherein the part B slides, of angular form. Of course this precise form changed, and any other which will the turning of one stituted for it.

I claim as my invention- 1. The extension-stem composed of the part B, having the partially-threaded recess, the sleeve B entering therecess, and the screw B held within the sleeve and engaging the threaded portion of the recess in the part B, substantially as specified.
