UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STANLEY NOVINSKY, O'F BRAZNELL, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 WAWZENIEC LATO, OF BRAZNELL, PENNSYLVANA.
PICTURE HANGER.
Application filed October 7, 1924. Serial No. 742,201.
To aZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, STANLEY Nevins/KY,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Braznell, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Picture Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in picture hangers wherein a bracket or gripping device for engaging the opposite edges of a picture frame is employed in lieu of the usual wire or cord.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a picture hanger wherein a pair of gripping devices in the form of hands are carried by a pair of tensioned rods with the hands forcefully gripping the opposite sides of a picture frame with a hanger detachably connected to the rod.
With the above and other objects in View that will appear as the nature of the inven tion is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a picture hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same, mounted upon a wall that is shown in section and further illustrated as gripping the opposite sides of a picture frame.
`Figure 3 is a top plan view of the hanger with a portion of the wall shown in secti-on,
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view showing the end of one of the tensioned rods supported in a gripping band,
Fioure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line i -V of Fig. 1 showing the connection between the two tensioned rods, and
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on line Vl-VI of Fig. 1 showing one leg of the hanger engaging one of the tensioned gripping rods.
The picture hanger embodies a pair of rods 1 and 2 arranged parallel to each other and connected together by a sliding connection including an eye 3 formed at one end of the rod 1 and extending at right angles therefrom to enclose the rod 2, while an eye 4 extending at right angles from the opposite end of the rod 2 encloses the rod 1. A coil spring 5 encloses the rod 2 between the eye portions 3 and 4 to cause the outer ends of the rods 1 and 2 to be moved inwardly when the rods are separated for com pressing the spring 5.
The outer ends of the rods 1 and 2 are connected to arms 6 that extend transversely of the ends of said rods, the outer ends of said rods being angularly bent as at 7 to be received in pockets formed in said arms as illustrated in Fig. 4 while gripping hands 8 extend forwardly of the arms 6 for gripping the opposite sides of a picture frame 9 illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. `When the arms 6 are separated, the spring 5 is placed under tension and when the gripping hands are moved into engagement with opposite sides of the picture frame 9, the spring tends to move the gripping hands 1() toward each other for frictionally gripping the picture frame to support the saine in a rigid manner.
A bracket hanger includes a substantially V-shaped frame having side legs 10 formed with a hook 11 at the lower ends thereof to engage the rods 1 and 2 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 while the upper closed end 12 of the bracket hanger is supported upon a nail or other support 13 sunk into the wall 14 as shown in Fig. 2. It will be noted that the inner ends 6a of the gripping arms 6 are formed at an angle to the longitudinal axis of said gripping arms so that when the picture frame 9 is gripped by the hands 8, the same will be disposed at an appropriate angle as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
From the above detail description of the device, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be understood, and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor| changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. In a picture hanger of the type described, a pair of engaging sliding rods, a gripping hand carried by the outer end of each rod, and a spring associated with said rods to cause the hands to be moved in directions toward each other for gripping the opposite sides of a picture frame, each grip- -When gripped by the hanger hand.
2. In a picture hanger of the type de- Fcribed, a pair of engaging sliding rods, a gripping hand carried by the outer end of each rod, a spring associated with said rods l0 to cause the hands to be moved in direct-ions toward each other for grippin the op ositc sides of a picture frame, und aanger rame detachably connected to said rod, each gripping hand including a rearwardly directed nrnrwith the free ends of the arms out :It :in angle for flat engagement with a supporting Wall to dispose the picture at :m angle when gripped by the hunger hund.
In testimonyv whereof I uix my signature.
STANLEY N0\ INSKY.
