PATENT} osmosi SAMUEL'G. ALLEN,,OF YCOItUMBUS,1OHIO, AND MARTIN JEWELL, or nswnnm mov srenan Krr.
Applicaton filed June 3, 1924:. Serial No. 717,633.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, SAMUEL G. ALLEN and MARTIN JEWELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, and Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signal Kits, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a signal kit to be used by railway trainmen and the like in the operation of trains, and has for its object to provide a compact and simple arrangement which will include all articles required in such service as flags, fuses and torpedoes, and which are so associated as to be instantaneously accessible for use when desired.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 taken at a slightly different angle.
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a sectional detail.
Referring to the drawings more in detail the numeral 1 indicates the handle of the combined device to which are attached the two receptacles or casings 2. These receptacles are firmly united and held in parallel relation by the web members 3 and are provided with laterally extending longitudinal slots 1. Mounted for rotation in each of the casings 2 is a shaft 5 provided with an enlarged disc portion 6 at its lower end for centering the shaft within the casing. The upper end of each shaft 5 is also enlarged and carries a knurled cap 7 by means of which the shaft may be rotated. A latch 8 is secured to each of the casings 2 and is adapted to engage over the enlargement 6 of the shaft in order to detachably hold the same within the casing. Red and white flags 9 or flags of other appropriate colors are attached to shafts 5 and are rolled onto said shafts when not in use through the medium of the caps 7.
Additional means for securing the receptacles 2 in parallel relation and for reinforcing the kit generally consists of the magazine 10 provided with overhanging flanges 11. This provides excellent means for storing torpedoes 12, and a spring clip 13 is mounted for cooperation with the magazine 10 so as to releasably hold the torpedoes therein.
The handle 1, which is in the form of a tube, provides a receptacle for the fusee 14, and is closed by means of a cap 15 which carries a latch 16 for engagement over a shoulder 17 formed on the handle 1.
In the operation of the kit the same may be readily employed as a visual hand signal by merely drawing out the red or white flag and manipulating the same by the handle 1. When not in use the flags may be stored in the casings 2 by merely turning the knobs 7 in the proper direction. A torpedo or fusee may of course be obtained by merely releas' ing the same from its compartment.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that we have devised an exceedingly simple and compact trainmans kit in which all the parts are neatly stored but which are readily accessible at all times.
In accordance with the patent statutes we have described what we now believe to be the best embodiment of the invention, but we do not wish to be understood thereby as limiting ourselves or the scope of the invention, as many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention; all such we aim to include in the scope of the appended claims.
Having fully described the invention what we claim as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A signal kit including a pair of parallel casing members provided with longitudinal slots, shafts rotatably mounted in said casings, flags having their inner edges connected to said shafts and their outer edges extending through said slots, a torpedo magazine rigidly connecting said casings and provided with overhanging flanges, and a handle also rigidly connecting said casings.
2. A. signal kit including a pair of paral lel casing members provided with longitudinal slots, shafts rotatably mounted in said casings, flags having their inner edges con nected to said shafts and their outer edges extending through said slots, a torpedo the other enlargement for normally prerenting removal of the shaft from its casing.
4:. A signal kit including a pair of )arallel casings provided with longitudinai slots through which flags are adapted to be drawn, a torpedo magazine rigidly connecting said casings, a hollow handle also rigidly connecting said casings. and a closure detachably connected to said handle.
MARTIN JEVELL.
