UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

EDMUND F. HOSKIN, OF CHCAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WlVL A. SPINKS & CO., OF

CHICAGO, ILLINOS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.

BILLIARD-CUE CHALK.

Application filed July 12, 1924.

To all w71 om t may concern Be it known that l, EDMUND F. HosKrN. a citizen ot the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Billiard-Cue Chalk, ot which the following is a specification` rlhis invention relates to improvements in billiard cue chalk. Among the features of my invention is the provision oit chalk ot this kind which can be easily and cheaply made, .is neat in appearance, and more readily usable than chalk heretofore made. My improved chalk is also especially adapted tor packing in containers such as cylindrical' boxes or cans.

Other features and advantages of my improved billiard cue chalk will appear more 'fully as l proceed with my speoiiication.

ln that 'form of device embodying the teatures ot my invention shown in the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a box or container showing twelve pieces ot chalk packed therein, Fig. 2 is a view taken as indicated by the line .QF-2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a view in perspective ot a single piece of chalk.

As shown in the drawings, 1() indicates a cylindrical box or container which may be made ot cardboard, tin or other suitable material, the ends being closed by an upper and lower cap member 11 and 12, respectively.

An individual piece ot chalk is shown inY perspective in F ig. 3. It will be seen that the chalk is substantially triangular in cross section so that it has three flattened faces indicated by 13, 13, The edges are rounded as indicated by let. The ends of the chalk are flat as indicated by 15 and there is provided at each end a centrally arranged circular rounded depression 16.

lt 'will be seen that because of the triangular shape of the chalk providing the three flat faces 13, the cha-lk may be very iirmly and securely grasped between the thumb, first, and second lingers of a user, in applying the chalk to the end of a billiard cue. By placing the thumb, first, and second lingers on the three flat faces 13, the chalk may be very securely held and given the necessary Serial No. 725.584.

back and forth rotation on the end of the cue in order to apply the cha-lk. The flat faces prevent the slipping of the chalk in the .Fingers ot' the user. Besides this feature, it will be seen that the triangular shape of the pieces ot chalk especially adapt them for packing in a cylindrical box or container. lt will be seen that six pieces of chalk placed together in a circle will just till one layer in the box or container. Packing of chalk in this manner in the box, makes the individual pieces lit snugly, so that there is no danger of movement in shipping, and consequently no contact of the pieces of chalk with each other with result-ing breaking, or chipping.

Although the container 10 is here shown o1 sull'icient height to accommodate two layers ot chalk. it is evident that the container may be made ot a sufficient height to accon'imodalte any desired nmuber ot layers.

1While l have shown. and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.

What lf claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents`v is:

1. A billiard cue chalk substantially triangular in cross section having a rounded depression at each end.

2, A billiard cue chalk substantially triangular in cross section. with rounded edges, and havingl a rounded depression at each end.

3. A plurality ot billiard rue chalks in combination with a. cylindrical box or container, the pieces ot chalk ot such size and shape that six placed together in a circle in the box will substantially :lill one layer in said box or container.

4. ik plurality ot billiard cue chalks, each substantially triangular in cross section, in combination with a cylindrical box or contune1',the pieces of Chalk of Such dimensions 6. A billiard cue chalk substantially trithat six placed together in a circle will subangular in Cross-Section, with rounded edges, sbnntially ll one layer in said box or conzmd having 2L rounded depression at one end. l" miner. Witness my hand and seul this second day A billiard cue chalk substantially trof July, A. D. 199A. angulagri' liu `cross-section 'having ya rounded depression at one end.
