Buttons of this type are constructed in many different ways and among the wellknown varieties to be found on the market are those which comprise a body portion having a depending pin portion arranged and designed along the general construction of a safety-pin. This particular arrange-- ment has its disadvantages which are principally due to the way in which the pins are mounted. The construction of an ordinary safety-pin is so well-known that it will suffice to call attention to the particular way in which the pin is embraced and held by guard shield at the head of the pin. The length of the pin between the spring portion and the shield is unsupported and any undue strain brought to hear at the mid portion thereof causes the latter to bow and the point finally is pulled out of the guard shield.
Another disadvantage of the pins and buttons of this character now on the market is that the pin point is exposed and by reason thereof may catch into and tear the material or stick and scratch the wearer and others.
With the above construction in mind it is the purpose of the present invention to provide a button of this type with a projecting pin which when engaged in the ma terial to which the button is attached, the pin itself is supported at the mid-portion thereoii' and between the hinge for the latter and the curved pointed portion.

This curve directs the point 01': the pin into the opposite end of the slot at the middle of the button when the pin is engaged, and in order to hold the pin in engaged position a hookshaped projection receives the portion of the gin adjacent the curved portion thereof, an arrangement which prevents the pin from being pulled from the material or becoming disengaged from the hook-shaped projection.
The invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, in which, Figure 1. is a substantially cross sectional view oi my improved button taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 2; Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the button showing the arrangement oi a single pin, and Figure 3 is a View of the button showing two fastening pins. Figure 1 is a. detail perspective view of the ring to be applied to the pin at the under side of the material to prevent the pin from being pulled through the cloth. Figure 5 is a modified form of pin showing the position of the free end of the pin when the latter is pulled perpendicularly with respect to the plane of the button. Referring to the drawings, 10 denotes a curved button shield having a closed straight bottom wall 11 provided with a radially disposed slot 12 extending slightly beyond the center of the wall 11. A pin 13 is secured at its straight end to the end of the slot adj a cent the edge of the curved shield portion 10, and the opposite end thereof is provided with an ogee curved portion 1 1- which enables the straightportion of the pin 13 to be disposed parallel to the walls of the slot 12 while the downwardly directed portion of the curve below the plane of the bottom wall 11 and the point 15 projects into the body of the hollow shield 10. The slot is slightly wider than the diameter of the pin 18 and the mid-portion of the bottom wall 11 and disposed on one wall of both walls of the said slot 12 is a hook-shaped projection 16 which is adapted to receive the pin 13 adjacent the beginning of the curved por tion 14- thereof and between the latter and the attached end of the pin.

Having described my invention what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat out is:
In a button, the combination of an integral crown portion and fiat bottom wall, the latter having a single radial slot, one wall thereot having an inwardly disposed tongue, a pin pivoted at one end at the interior of the button and at the extreme outer end of the slot, the free end of the pin being bent in an ogee curve out 'ardly from the said flat wall and having its extreme end bent upright at right angles to the axis of the straightportion of the pin, and an annular locking member having a lateral U-shapcd midportion provided with notches to embrace the upright end and the ogee portion of the pin, substantially as described.
