' IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Leitrrs Patent No. 152,374. dated June 23, 1874; application filed March 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK HENRY, of the city and county of Philadelphia and the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be aclear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makin g part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of the device embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are views of two opposite sides thereof. Fig. 4 is an end view of a detached portion. Fig. 5 is a top view of a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
It is well known that, owing to the difference in the construction of sewing-machines, there is no uniformity of the location of the openings in the cloth-plates for the reception of the screws which clamp various attachments to the plates in juxtaposition to the needle-openings.
In attachments in use the joints between the bodies thereof, and gages by which the attachments are clamped to the cloth-plate, have been so constructed that, in order to adjust the attachments relatively to needle-openings, the bodies and gages required to be set carefully at an acute or obtuse angle to each other, in order that the working portion of the bodies may stand at an exact right angle to the longitudinal direction of the plate, whereby the work may not be irregularly performed.
My invention consists in the attachment, having a laterally-extending plate, which is providedwith an eye and flat portion, in combination with a link or loop, which extends at right angles to the attachment, and is connected to the gage which bears against the flat portion of the plate of the attachment.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the clamping gage of a sewing machine attachment, B. The working portion. or body 0 of the attachment has connected to, or formed with, one side thereof a laterally-projecting plate,-:D,= a portion of which is formed into a groove or eye, G, and the remaining portion G is horizontally flat, and extends in line parallel with the bottom of the said body. (See Fig. 4.) The inner portion of the gage, or portion which is to be connected to the body 0, is formed with eyes H, through which passes one limb of a loop or linkshaped piece, J, another limb of which is inserted into the eye or groove G of theplate D, and when the parts are in position the portion of the gage A which is formed with the eyes H will rest on the portion G of the plate 1).'
It will be seen that, in order to adjust the attachment relatively to the needle-hole in the longitudinal direction, the gage will be operated. as usually, and when the proper position is obtained the transverse adjustment of the body of the attachment is readily performed by simply sliding the said body, (the gage not having been tightened,) so that when the adjustmentis accomplished the right-angular connection of the gage A and body 0 has been maintained. The pressure of the inner portion of the gage A. on the part D of the body 0 will firmly hold the latter in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letterslatent, is-
The laterally-extendillg plate 1), adapted to be secured to, or forming part of, an attachment, and provided with eye G and flat portion G, in combination with the 'link or loop J, and the gage A resting on said portion G, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
