Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSSELL W. PERKINS, OF WEST MERIDEN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES H. HOLMES, OF WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WORK-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 138,691, dated May 6, 1873; application filed February 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUssELL W. PERKINS, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in \Vork-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawin g and the letters of reference marked there. on, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents 1n-- Figure 1, a perspective view of the workholder attached to the table; Fig. 2, a side view, showing a section of the base on line as w Fig. 3, the clamping-block, which is secured to the table.
This invention relates to a device for securing the article known as a work-holder to the table of a sewing-machine or other point where it is desired to secure the holder; These have usually been secured by a clamping device, so that releasing the clamp would free the holder, or they have been permanently secured to the table, so as not to be removed. The object of this invention is to more readily secure the holder and yet allow it to be easily removed when required; and it consists in constructing the base of the holder with a groove of dovetail or equivalent form, and attaching to the table a block which corresponds to this groove, so that the holder may be set onto the block and there held firmly and removed without loosening or removing the said block from the table.
A represents the table; B, the base of the work-holder, the work-holder here represented as a figure of a sailor, C, having an anchor, D, pivoted to the body, the anchor serving as a cam to clamp the work upon the base B. The base is constructed with a groove, a, on the under side, preferably of dovetail form. B is a block corresponding in form to the groove, and fitting closely therein. The block is permanently secured to the table, as seen in Fig. 2, and when the workholder is required for use it is set onto the said block, and as soon as set, is firmly secured, the groove and block both being preferably made slightly tapering. The holder is removed by simply drawing the base from the block.
It will be understood that the holder shown is not a material part of this invention other styles of work-holders may be furnished with the base 13, and the block constructed as described.
I claim as my invention- A work-holder, the base of which is con structed with a groove or slot, combined with a correspondingly-shaped block to be attached to the table, so that by means of the said block the holder may be secured to or removed from the table without removing the block from the table, substantially as set forth.
RUSSELL W. PERKINS.
