ATENE l'RNlESTk LUNSFOR-), OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
Innen snai.' non cAsKnrs.
Apiieationvaied. August 13. 1924. serial no. 731,865.
TOUZZ 'iu/wm 1f/may conce/ra I Be it lniownthat 1, EnNnsT LUNsrouD. a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Atlanta in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inner Seals for Gaskets, of which the following is a specification. A K
This invention relates to inner seals lfor caskets and aims to provide a simple, 'effective and reliable means for mounting the glass or transparent panel on the metal frame member of the seal, the mounting means being adapted to be manufactured at a comparatively slight expense from materials and by means of facilities ordinarily available.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain features of the construction. combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciication and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a casket having an inner seal embodying the present invention,
Figure 2 is abottom plan view of one form of inner seal embodying the present invention,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of another form of inner seal embodying the present invention7 Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in section taken approximately on line 4-4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a similar view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that in all embodiments of the invention, an inner seal designated generally at 10 is provided and is mounted on a casket 11 in the usual manner as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. As usual the inner seal includes an open rectangular frame 12 and a glass or transparent panel 13.
rThe present invention aims to provide a. novel mounting for the glass 13 on the frame 12 and to this end the frame 12 is formed around its upper marginal edge with an inwardly directed flange 14 having a depending lip 15. At regular spaced intervals around the lliange 14 depending studs 16 are provided, the studs being spot welded to the under face of the flange 14 and being externally threaded. An elastic packing strip 17 .is placed up against the under face of the flange 14 and is conlined and concealed by the lip 15 although the washer 1T extends downwardly beyond the lip to some extent. Openings 1S are formed in the packing strip 17 to accommodate vthe studs 16. The marginal edges of the glass 13 engage the portion of the strip 17 which lies inwardly ofthe stud 16, as shown in Figures 4 and 5. is illustrated in Figures 1-l and 5 the upper face of the glass 13 around its marginal edge engages the packing strip 17 and the under face of this glass '.13 around its marginal edge is engaged by a second packing strip 20. The packing strips 17 and 2O are held in sealing engagement with the glass 13 and the glass and packing strips are supported by fastening and clamping means which coact with the studs 16.
1n the form of the invention shown in Figures 2 and 4 this fastening and clamping means comprises a rectangular clamping plate 25 having apertures receiving the studs 16. The clamping plate 25 is dis posed flush up against the under side of the packing strip 20 and compresses and clamps this packing strip against the glass 13 under the iniiuence of nuts 26 threaded on the studs 16 and exerting a pressure against the clamping plate 25 through the medium of spring locking washers 28. The resiliency of the washers 28 transmits a yieldable pressure to the clamping platel and insures against cracking of the glass as well against accidental dislvilacement of the nuts.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 3 and 5 the clamping plate and the spring washers 28 are omitted and in lieu thereof a separate spring clamping plate 30 is employed for each stud 1G, each clamping plate 30 having an aperture receiving the stud and having a curved offset end 31 engaging the adjacent wall of the frame member 12. In this form the nuts 26 engage the clamping plates 3() and spring' them up into engagement with the packing strip 20. These spring clamping plates by virtue of their resiliency which is brought into play by the flexure of the plates due to their engagement with the frame member 12 serve to transmit an elastic pressure to the packing strips whereby cracking or fracture of the glass is prevented.
I claim:
l. A n inner'seal for caskets comprising a metal frame member having a flange, a plurality of studs secured to and depending from the flange, a packing strip set up against the under face off the iiange, a glass having its upper marginal edge engaged with the packing strip,`a second packing strip engaged With the under marginal edge of the glass, nuts threaded en the studs and means between the nuts and the second packing strip for .urging the second pack-V ing strip against the glass and for preventing accidental displacement of the nuts.
2. An inner seal for caskets of the character described and in accordance with claim 1 and wherein the said means comprises a single rectangular clamping plate having apertures receiving the studs, and spring locking Washers between the nuts and said plate.
3.7An inner seal fer caskets of the character ydescribed and in accordance with claim l and wherein the said means comprises a sepa-rate clamping plate for each stud, each clamping plate having a curved eiset end engaged with the frame member and each clamping plate being engaged by the nut of its stud.
4L. An inner seal for caskets comprising a metalrame member having a flange, a
