NUT-LOCK.
1,261,232. Original application ilen bctober 25,
Beit known that I, EDWARD R. HIBBARD, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinoi's,=have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a description.
This application is a-division of an application heretofore made by me, which was duly Iiled on October 25, 1912, Serial No.
This invention Ibelongs to the general class ofdevices intended to so engage with a bolt as to prevent the accidental disengagement of the nut therefrom, and has for its object the economical and extremelyT eiicient device for the purpose stated. To this end my invention consists in the vnovel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more-particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein Vlike reference characters. indicate like or corresponding Parts: i
proved nut lock;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section ofthesame on the line 2, 2, taken in the direction indi. cated by the arrows; and j section taken o n the i Asame line, but in the opposite direction from that indicated in Fig. 2.
My improved nut lock is constructed from a single sheet of metal, and preferably stamped'out 4into the form indicated. For convenience I have called this inv the specification, and in some bf the claims, owing to the fact that all the marginal edges are bent downward as-indicated. In the drawings, 1 indicates a suitable sheet of' metal, having punched in it a bolt hole 2. The wall of the bolt hole is severedas :at 3, and laterally oiiset as at 4, 5, shownj in Fig. 3. The wall of the bolt, hole is preferably stamped out substantially V-shaped, as .fl
shown, so as to properlyengage with the depression between two threads on'the bolt to which it. may be applied, and the lateral oset isv sufficient, not only to permit the lock to properly thread upon the' bolt, but
Specification of Letters Patent. l
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of my inicup-shapedl Patented Apr. 2, 19116.

also preferably offset to an greater or less than the distance'between two threads on the bolt, so as to firmly frictionally engage on the thread. The marginal edges of the nut, as at 6, are bent or flanged xin the form indicated, and at substantially right angles to the face of the lock, the anged portions 6 being preferably substantially integral, as indicated. This construction not only permits a convenient means to engage the wrench with the nut lock, but Aserves a still more important purpose when the lock is used with the recessed face for the working face. When so used the outer edges of the flanges 6 will first contact with the holding nut, or further setting the lock with the wrench will cause the worln'ng face thereof to spring downward, the plate being suiiiciently resilient to vpermit this slight action in the preferred construction. This spring action serves to more rmly and securely retain the nut lock in position, and in practical use has been found very elicient for the purpose stated.
Obviously, the form of the nut lock is not material, and it may be either square, or 1polygonal as indicated in the drawings.
t will be noted that where in the claims I have referred to a cup-shaped disk, I
wish to be understood as meaning a disk constructedy in thev manner shown in the 2 drawings, with the depending edges 6. The
same will be understood where the term angedmay be used.
aving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 1. A nut lock, comprising a disk having a bolt hole formed therein, is V-shaped to form a single thread adapted to engage a bolt thread, and severed and extent slightly the wall of which permanently 'offset to permit the same to y engage with a bolt thread, the disk being anged around the' edge thereof substantially as described.-
2. In combination with a bolt a nut lock, comprising'I a disk having a bolt hole formed therein the wall of which is V-shaped to form a single thread, adapted to engagea Ico bolt thread, and severed and permanently signed my name in the presence of twosubisplaced on oppgsite slilde, of the bdisk, a scribing Witnesses.
istance Varying rom t e istance etween f the threads of the bolt, said disk being g EDWARD R HIBBARD 5 flanged on all of the edges thereof substan- Witnesses:
tially as described. y W. C. COOK,
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto S. S. SWASEY.
