To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW R. SMITH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Grafton, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Saws, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for saws.
The object of this invention is to provide for hack-saws, or saws having a U-shaped frame which supports the saw-blades at its open side, attachments whereby the distance between the saw-blade and the back of the frame may be adjusted to one or more predetermined limits without any necessary modification or adjustment of the frame itself. Other minor objects appear hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, 1 is a side view of a hack-saw with my invention attached thereto; Fig. 2, an end view of the left-hand portion of Fig. 1, looking to the right; Fig. 3, a perspective view of one of my attachments; Fig. 4, a detail view showing two of my attachments arranged in combination to provide an extraordinary distance between the saw blade and the back of the saw-frame; Fig. a fragment of one of my attachments showing a modification; and Fig. 6, a side view of a screw-lug to fit one of the two right hand holes in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a section on the line VII-VII on Fi 5, showing a screw stud applied to one of the holes 20. Fig. 8 is a view showing in perspective a portion of one of my attachments with another modification.
(En the drawing, 1 show a hacksaw having a U-shaped frame comprising the back member 1 and the end members 2 and 3. The back-member may be adjustable but the end members need not be adjustable. I have 45 shown the frame composed of a single piece of metal having the rectangular loops 4. and 5 riveted to the ends of the end members 2 and 3.
6 is the handle having the metal stud 7 projecting through the loop 4 and provided with the lateral pin 8. 9 is a metal rod in the loop 5 and projecting at both ends beyond the loop, the inner end has the lateral pin 10 and the outer end is threaded and has 55 the winged nut 11 working thereon against the outer end of the loop 5. The saw blade Serial No. 737,464.
12 has at its ends eyes through which the said pins 8 and 10 project. By turning the nut in one direction the saw-blade is rigidly held in place on the pins in a manner readily understood. The nut is turned in the opposite direction, to release the saw-blade. The mechanism so far described is old and is presented merely to show one of the many forms of hack-saws to which my invention is applicable.
My invention comprises the attachments or extension pieces 13 adapted at one end for ready connection to the end members 2 and 3, and at the other end for the reception of the handle 6 and its stud 7 and the rod 9 and its nut 11. The attachments are preferably made exactly alike, each compris ing metal bar or strip 14 having at one end the loop precisely like the loops a and 5, and at the other end means, as the studs 15 and 16, for attaching it to the frame- end 2 or 3. The strip 1% is preferably of the same width as the ends 2 and 3 and is applied to the end 2 or 3 so as to lie thereon with their sides in contact and with the stud 15 at the inner edge of the member and the stud 16 at the outer edge thereof, the former being nearer the back member 1 than the latter. The studs are arranged in a line which makes an angle with the direction of the length of the attachment 13. the stud 15 being the farther out on the attachment. The studs have the necks 17 which have a length equal to the thickness of the end members 2 and 8 and lie against the latter, and have at their outer ends the heads 18 which lie over the end members to preventthe separation of the attachments from the end members by any lateral movement of the attachments. The studs are so arranged that, when the necks 17 are engaged with opposite edges of an end member, the attachment will be parallel with. the end n'iember. The length of the attachment is such that its looped end will extend beyond the loop on the adjacent end memoer the desired distance. The intermediate portion of each attachment has the curve or bend 19 to receive the loop 4 or 5.
