BRUSH HANDLE commcnou Filed Sept. so, 1948 W Wu" J m/4. A. FkvoA Patented June 9, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BRUSH HANDLE CONNECTION Paul A. Fryda, West Allis, Wis.
Application September 30, 1948, Serial No. 51,939
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in brushes, and more particularly to a novel brush having a handle transversely adjustable thereon.
An object of the invention is to provide a brush having a handle with a transverse adjustment of greater scope than is possible with similar devices of the type now in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a brush of the type having a handle so adjustable that it may be fixed anywhere in an arc of approximately 180 degrees. Other devices of the type now in use are limited to a smaller scope of movable adjustments by reason of the back structure of such brushes.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective from above of a brush and handle embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the curved nut employed.
Fig. 3 is a side view partly in section and partly in elevation of the device.
Fig, 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional front View of the device.
Fig. 5 is a side view partly in elevation and partly in section of the arcuate bracket.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral I refers to the device generally, having a back II provided with a transverse recess I2, rectangular in cross-section centrally thereof. The back I I is grooved horizontally at each end as at I3 to accommodate a rubber bufi'er strip I4 which completely encircles said back. A bracket I is arcuately formed and has enlarged end portions I6 and I! which are apertured as at I8 to accommodate threaded means I9 for securing the said bracket to the back I I. The bracket I5 has a slot at I9 thereof which accommodates the movement therethrough of the bolt which is threaded into the handle member 2| and has engaged with its free threaded end 22 the curved nut 23. The handle- 2| is provided with a conventional metal ferrule 24 adapted to bear against said bracket I5. The back I I is provided with the conventional brush bristles 25 as shown in Fig. 4. The bracket I5 has the outer marginal flanges 26 as a guide for the curved nut 23. Fig. 5 shows a modified form of bracket 30 in which the arcuate portion 3| has the outer flanges 32, and in which said arcuate portion 3| has a circular form throughout its length and is provided with the anchor portions 32 and 33 for securing the same to a brush back.
In use, an operator will turn the handle member 2I to the left to loosen the nut 23 on the bolt 20, thus permitting movement arcuately of the handle to any desired point of placement on the bracket I5. The slot I9 is long enough so that the nut will be accommodated on either side within the recess at I2, thus allowing at least of travel for the handle with reference to the brush back II. When the desired location has been arrived at, the handle member 2| is turned to the right in order to tighten the handle on the said bracket I5.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
In combination with a brush having a brush back, said back having a transverse recessed portion across its top thereof, an arcuate bracket terminating in vertical anchor plates spanning said brush back over the recessed portion, said anchor plates being secured to said brush back adjacent said recessed portion at both ends thereof, said arcuate bracket and. vertical anchor plates having a slot therein extending substantially to the bottom of the recessed portion at both ends thereof, flanges on the outer edges of said arcuate bracket, a handle member having a threaded bolt secured to one end thereof, said threaded bolt projecting through said slot, a curved nut secured to said projecting bolt, said curved nut having a width slightly smaller than the width between the flanges and the width of the recessed portion, said slotted arcuate bracket and vertical anchor plates guiding said handle and nut into and out of said recessed portion whereby said handle may be disposed and fixed in any position through a span of at least 180 with reference to the top of said brush back.
