Be it known that I WADE citizen of the United tates, and a resident ilo cles provided with means for engaging the handle.

Another object of the invention is to provide a handle attachment which is removably and adjustably associated with the top of a. brush or a similar article.

The invention consists of the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and fully set forth in the claims'.

Referring to the drawings, 6 represents the bristles ofa brush secured in a member 7 formin the bristles holder. The member 7 able from sa'me, and adapted to engage the top 9 of the brush, which' is rigidly secured to the member 7. by means of winged nuts 10 engaging the bolts 8 and pressing against washers 11 provided on the upper surface of the brush'top 9. The brush top preferably has, in cross section, the shape of a circular segment the base of which is substantially equal in width to the width of the bristles holder 7. Fitting over the recess13 is a slotted guide member 14, the slot 15 yof--wliich is infalinement with the recess 13. Thegu-ide member 14 tting over the curved' surface of the raised portion 12 covers entirely the recess 13 and issecured vto the raised portion 12 of w the top 9 by means of screws or any other suitable means. The ends of the Guide member 11i-are referably extending slightly over the `base o. the top 9 so as to engage the sides of the bristles holder 7, thereby helping the bolts 8 to maintain the top 9 and-the bristle holder7 in alinement with each other.

Associated with the guidemember 14 is a nut carrier 16 the flange portion of which is provided with a central opening'17, and

with a pair of parallel central arms 18, each forming the continuation of a side of` the flange, which is preferably of rectangular form. The arms 18 of the nut carrier 16 fit snugly into the sklot 15 of the guide member 14 with the `flange resting on the top surface of the guide member 14. The face of the'.

nut carrier contacting with the guide member 14 is provided with raised edges 19 which are adjacent to the arms 18, and which raisededges, in combination with the Vcentral portion of the flange, form contact points between the flange of the nut carrier 16 and the surface of the guide member 14;

With a brush as described, the top can be used with different bristle holders.' As, for example, brushesfor dirty and clean work can be used with the same top; or, when a brush is worn out, anew bristles yholder can be secured tothe old brush top by a simple manipulation of the bolts 8. This provision not only gives a perfectly adjustable handle but it .saves the expense of brush' tops, which lis not to be neglected Where a large number of' brushes is used.

Having thus described Amy invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v

1. The combination with@ brush top having a recess of a handle attachment comprising a nut in the recess; a guide member having a slot and inclosing the nut in'the recess; a member resting on the guide member and having means .passing through the` slot andengaging the nut, whereby the nut is carried; and a handle. having a threaded stud adapted to engage the nut for the purl pose set forth.

2. The combination with a brush top havlng a recess .ofta handle attachmentcomprismg a nut in said recess; a carrier for said nut; a guide for said nut carrier se- Lhaving a flange portion resting on the slotted member and having arms extending through the slot'and engaging the nut 1n the recess, said iiange having a central opening in alinement with the nut opening; and ahandle having a threaded end adapted to 'passthrough the openingoi:l the flange and engage the nut, whereby the handle, nut

and nut carrier may be locked at any' de? sired position of the slotted member.

4.- The ycombination with a brush, or similar article, having a top provided with a recess therein of a handle attachment comprising, a locking'member in said recess; a guide inclosing the locking'member in the' recess;,a carrier for said locking member engaging said guide; anda han le ,havin-g' means adapted to engage the lo ring ymember and whereby the handle is locked to said guide, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
