SKIRT GUARD.
Application filed Dctcber 17', 1923. Serial No. 669,645. To all whom it may concern: tion, showing the pocket partially closed, Be it known that I, BERTHA Enrrn and a covering strip for the material of the NELSON, a citizen of the United States, repocket at the joint of the spring clamp. siding 1n the clty of New York, borough of Similar reference numerals indicate the 5 Manhattan, in the county and State of New Same parts in all the figures. 60 York, have invented a certain new and use- Referring to the drawings, designates ful Improvement in Skirt Guards, of which a belt or band adapted to be applied about the following is a specification. the waistof the wearer. The object of the invention is to provide Straps 14: or the like are suspended from a device of this character that can be readithe belt in any suitable manner; four are ly applied to and removed from the person shown each equipped with a loop 1:") through of the wearer, and adjustable to accommowhich the belt is loosely passed, thus perdate it to the skirt-length and waist measmitting the straps to be shifted on the belt ure, and also adjustable as to circumferto the desired positions, and the outer porential length of the garment-receiving tion of each loop is provided on the inner pocket. face with a stud portion 16, shown in dotted A further object is to provide the pocket lines in Figure 2, adapted to engage either 25 with means for clasping the skirt to hold of the socket portions 13 on one end of the the latter in the correct position. belt or other specially located socket por- Other objects and advantages of the. intions 17.

In use the adjacent ends of the pocket are 50 Figure 7 is vertical section taken longidesigned to overlap, the one being received tudinally of the pocket and partly in elevawithin the other, as in Figure 1, and the tion, showing one of the casings for the lapped ends thus engaged are adapted to be arms of the spring clamp. secured in such adjusted position by means Figure 8 is a vertical section taken on the as separable fasteners 23 and 24 concealed line 88 of Figure 7 and partly in elevawithin the pocket, as indicated in Figure 2,
a plurality of such fasteners being shown to permit the pocket to be adjusted circumferentially and held.
The inner faces of the portions forming the pocket 20 are provided with oppositely placed vertical casings 25 in which are received the arms of spaced spring clamps 26 serving when distended to hold the pocket open for facilitating the entrance of the skirt 21, and when collapsed to close the pocket and grasp closely the inclosed skirtmargin.
The clamps consist each 01 two flat arms 27 and 28 of thin metal, each having holes 29 to receive stitches by which they are secured to the casings; the lower end of one arm 28 is provided with an angularly faced projecting lug 30 carrying a transverse pin 31 which serves as a pivot on which is mounted the adjacent end of the other arm 27, as in Figures 5 and 8, the arm 27 being bifurcated and formed with eyes 32 to re ceive the ends of the pivot or pin 31. 'On the arm 27 is mounted a flat spring the free end of which bears against the faces 3% or 35 of the lug 30 to hold the clamp in either its closed or open position by an action analogous to that of a knife-blade hinge. The clamp is shown in an intermediate position in Figure 8.
To protect the material of the pocket at the fold 22 from abrasion by the clamp joint, a protecting strip 36 is introduced extending from one casing 2-5 to its opposite neighbor and lying between the joint and inner face of the fold as shown in Figure 8, to take the wear at that point.
The mode of application and use will be apparent. The belt 10 is applied about the waist of the wearer and properly adjusted as to girth. The skirt is then arranged with its lower edge and margin in the pocket 20, the clamps being opened to distend the pocket, the adjacent ends of the pocket are then placed one within the other and arrangements of parts may be resorted to without departin from the spirit or the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
I claim j 1. A skirt guard comprising means circumferentially adjustable to enfold the lower n'largin of a garment, a waistband circumferentially adjustable, and means depending from said waistband and connected to said first-named means, for supporting the latter solely from the waist of the wearer.
2. The skirt guard described consisting of a pocket to entold the lower margin of a garn'ient, clamps in said pocket, means for suspending said pocket solely from the waist of the wearer, and means for adjusting said pocket circumferentially.
3. A. skirt guard comprising a pocket to enfold the lower margin of a garment, suspending means ior said pocket comprising straps and a belt carrying thesame and adapted to be supported entirely from the waist of the wearer, pivoted skirt-clamping means in said pocket, and protecting means in said pocket between the latter and said clamping means, said pocket and suspend ing means being adjustable.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I atfix my signature hereto:
BERTHA EDITH NELSON.
