To all 'whom 'it 'may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK HOWARD SMEDLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbia, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve do declare the folments in Overalls; and I lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in overalls, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a garment especially adapted for mechanics, molders, etc., and which permits freedom of movement when the wearer assumes various positions, and is held against slipping down at the waist.

Another object of the invention is to provide an overall of this character which is provided with a protective pad at the back of the same, so positioned that it will cover the portion of the wearers body to the rear of the kidneys, and will alford a protective covering for the same.

Another object of the invention is to provide an overall of this character which is provided at the knees of the same with protective strips to take the strain therefrom when the wearer stoops.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will e very eicient in operation.

,With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In describing my invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding. parts throughout the several views. In F1 1 I have illustrated my improved overa ls or` trousers formed by stitching two front pieces 2 and two 'back pieces 3 together, and securing the adjacent edges of the same in a like manner. The upper edges of these trousers are contracted'or curved inwardly, as shown at 4, so as the same will snugly engage the hips and waist of the wearer.

These overalls or trousers are made of any desired coarse material, such as best applicable to the use -to which they are put, and they are made large with a full seat, so as to allowthem to be worn over ordinary garments when desired.

A back strip or belt piece 5 is secured to the outer surface of the two back pieces 3 of the trousers by stitching the edges of the same thereto, and this back belt piece extends across these two pieces at its upper edge and downwardly therefrom a considerable distance, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, so as to both retain the heat of the wearers body and to bridge the back seam 'at the upper part of the seat where the tendency to rip is very considerable. This back strip also extends across the upper ends of the side seams that unite the front pieces to the rear pieces and opposes ripping *at these points, and also reduces the stretching'of the upper back part of the trousers to the minimum. Secured. to the opposite ends of the piece 5 is a pair of lforwardly extending straps 6 and 7, which are relatively narrow with respect to the back strip and extend 2 of the trousers, and overlap, said overlapping ends being adapted to be secured in Various adjusted positions by means of a buckle 8 placed at one side of the center of the front of the trousers. ' same will not cause the wearer .any inconvenience when stooping forward. The front portion of the trousers is provided with a strap supporting loop 9 directly in the center thereof, that will hold the strap 7 in position.

The trousers l are provided inside of the rear portions 3 of the same with a protective pad 10. This pad extends across'the back portions 3 at the opposite edge of the same, approximately covering the same space that is covered by the back strap or belt 5 on the outside of these portions. This pad is held in position by stitching at the edges of the same, and the said pad is of suiiicient width whereby when the trousers are in osition the same will cover the portion of tiie body of the wearer to the rear of the kidneys, to afford a protection for the same. This ad is formed of any desired material, pre erably woolenor iannel, and when in position will protect the back of the wearer from cold, etc.

Secured in the legs of the trousers are substantially rectangular shaped strips 11, which have their upper edges l2 stitched transversely across the front portion 2 of the legs of said trousers on the inner sides of the same. These strips'are positioned a short distance above the knee and depend below the same. They hang loosely and. when in position, when the wearer stoops, they overcome the strain which is normally directed at the kneerjoint, and which has the effect ofpulling the overall away from the waist in the rear. These strips willM prevent this strain and also form pads when the wearer is kneeling.

From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of my new and improved overall, it will be seen that I have provided a garment of this character which, when in use, allows the wearer perfect freedom of movement in all directions. The

same may be securely fastened at the waist and it will absolutely not slip upon constant movement of the wearer, and causing him to readjust the belt ra number of times. Owing to thefact that the upper end or waist portion of the trousers are constructed so that the same will snugly engage the waist and hips of the wearer, the adjustable belt affords a quick fastening means for securing the waist in position.

This overall-is also provided with a protective covering at the back side of the waist, which protects the kidneys and back of the wearer from cold, etc. Also, the knee strips in the legs of the trousers prevent undue strain thereon when the wearer doubles his legs, as these movable pads allow certain sliding movement and prevent 'the trousers binding at the knee. I

From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of my 'improved overall, the manner of applying the same to use will be readily understood, and it will be seen that I have provideda device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient in operation.

-I claimsl. In an overall or trousers, the combination with a front portion, back pieces having their rear edges connected together by a seam of stitching and having their front edges connected to said front portion by sideseams of stitching; of a back strip extending along the upper rear edge of said back pieces and rearward of and across said rear seam and across said side seams and terminating slightly forward of the latter and being secured at its forward ends to said front portion and secured to said back pieces at the top of said rear seam and also secured to said back pieces at a considerable distance below said top or at a point substantially at the top of the trousers seat, substantially as shown and for the purposes specified.

In an overall or trousers, the combination with a front portion, back pieces having their rear edges connected together by a seam offstitching and having their front edges connected to said front portion by side seams of stitching; of a back strip extending along the upper rear edge of said back pieces and rearward of and across said rear seam and secured to said back pieces and terminating adjacent to said side seams, said back strip being relatively wide and extending from the top of said rear pieces to the trousers seat and stitched at its top and bottom, a pair of straps which are relatively narrow in comparison with said back strip, said straps extending along the front top part of the trousers and each having one end secured to an end of said back strip, and a buckle, one of said straps having said buckle secured thereto at the front part of the trousers but at a point remote from the middle of said front part, said straps being cooperative with said buckle and back strip for adjusting the trousers, for obtaining such beneficial results as specified.
