Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS HOLLAND, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES IVATSON, OF SAME PLACE.
lMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LIFT AND FORCE PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152, l 10, dated June 16, 1874; application filed April 9,1874. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HOLLAND, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in the Construction of Oonr bined Lift and Force Pumps, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is simplicity in the construction of combined lift and force pumps, an object attained by the combination illustrated in the accompanying drawing of the base A forming the well for receiving the water from the lift pump, the frame B, and steam-cylinder D with the forcepump E, and the rod F of the lift-pump.
The base A is placed centrally over the mouth a of the well, which may be an ordinary artisian well, and is firmly secured to a suitable foundation, G, the base being made in the form of a box or reservoir, to the bottom of which is secured an open stand, I), the lower end of the barrel of the force-pump E being secured to this stand in a manner which requires no explanation. The frame B is secured to, or cast with, the base A, and to the top of this frame is secured the steam-cylinder D, the piston-rod of which is connected directly to the plunger 0 of the force-pump. In the present instance the cylinder is provided with an ordinary slide-valve operated by an eccentric on a crank-shaft, I, which is driven from a cross-head, m, secured to the pistonrod, and adapted to guides on the frame B.
This plan may be adopted where power is required to drive machinery, in addition to that required for operating the pumps; but when the engine has to be used for pumping only, the crank-shaft and its connections may be dispensed with, and the valve may be operated directly from the piston-rod, through the medium of any of the devices heretofore employed, in connection with direct action steam-pum ps. 4
The force-pump is provided with a valvechest, F, to which water is admitted from the base A through a branch, f, and from which the water is discharged through a branch, h. It has not been deemed necessary to illustrate or describe the lift-pump, which may be of the usual construction, and placed within the the well in the usual manner. t
It should be understood that no new principles or modes of operation are involved in my invention, which is restricted to the special mode of constructing the machine with the view to the attainment of compactness, lightness, and economy, both in material and Workmanship, two special features being embodied in the structure, namely, the utilizing of the base A of the machine, by converting it into a reservoir for receiving the water from the liftpump, and making the rods of the latter a continuation of the force-pump, the combination of these two features enabling me to construct the machine in the simple manner described.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the base A, serving as a reservoir for receiving the water from the lift-pump, the frame B, and steam-cylinder D with the force-pump E, and rod F of the liftpump, forming a continuation of the plunger of the force-pump, all as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS HOLLAND.
