SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,277, dated March 8, 1904.
Application filed May 6, 1903. Serial No. 155,874,. (No modeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES A. BECHER, a resident of Mishawaka, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana,have invented certain new and usefullmpro'vements in Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in engines, and more particularly to engines having oscillating pistons, the object of the invention being to provide an improved engine of this character which will be extremely compact and well balanced and on a rigid short compact bed and which will be simple in construction and operation; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line wwof Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section.
1 represents the engine-bed, which comprises a base-plate and a vertical central web 2, having strengthening-flanges at its top and edges, as shown. The web 2 has bearings for the crankshaft 3 and also for the hub 1 of my improved engine cylinder or chamber 5. This chamber comprises a hollow cup .6, having a central hollow cylindrical extension or hub 4 on one side secured in the bearing on web 2, and this cup has an external flange 7 to which a plate 8 is secured by bolts or screws and closes the cup forming the engine cylinder or chamber, and said plate 8 has a bearing 9, alining with the hub 4:, which together form the bearings for the drive shaft 10. The drive-shaft 10 has a crank arm 11 secured thereon, and a pitman 12 connects this crankarm 11 with a crank-pin 13 on one side of a heavy wheel 14: on the crankshaft 3, which latter is supported in the bearingon web 2 of bec 1. I
On opposite sides of the cylinder 5 steamchests 15 are secured, and reciprocating valves 16 arelocated in these steam-chests 15 and are operated as will now be explained.
A bracket 17 is secured to the upper portion of the cylinder and provides a bearing for a shaft 18, on which a walking-beam 19 is se cured, and valve-rods 20 are pivotally secured to the ends of this walkingbeam 19, pass throughpacking-rings and nuts 22 in the top of steam-chests 15, and have the valves 16 secured thereon. Adepending arm 23 is secured on shaft 18 and is pivotally connected at its lower end to a pitman 24, provided with a ring frame or strap 25, mounted on an eccentric 26 on shaft 3, so that as the shaft 3 is revolved the eccentric will operate the walkingbeam to reciprocate the valves.
On shaft 10 in the cylinder an oscillating piston 27 is secured and comprises a sleeve keyed to the shaft and radial blades 28, snugly engaging the walls of the cylinder, and stops 29 are located in the cylinder to limit the turning movement of the piston and serve the same functions as the cylinder-heads of an ordinary reciprocating piston-engine. These stops 29 have exhaust-ports 30 therein, and ports 31 and 32 are provided above and below the stops and alternately serve as inlet and exhaust ports, according to the position of the valves.
The operation of my improvements is as follows: As shown in Fig. 3, the live steam is about to enter port 32 on one side and port 31 on the other and exhaust the steam through the ports 30, and as the piston blades are forced around they will, through the medium of oscillating arm 11, turn crank-shaft 3 and eccentric 26, which latter will move pitman 24, arm 23, and walking-beam 19. This movement of the walking-beam will depress one valve 15 and elevate the other to change their positions and reverse the flow of the steam'to .return the piston to its former position, and
so on, the oscillating movement of the arm 11 serving to revolve the crank-shaft 3, and the operation of the valves is automatic.
A great many changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not confine myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

3. The combination with an engine-bed having a vertical Web, of a engine-cylinder having a hub on one side secured 1n a bearing on the Web to support the cylinder on one side of the Web, a crank-shaft supported across the Web, an oscillating piston in the cylinder, a shaft driven thereby and projecting through the hub, an arm on the shaft, at one side of the Web opposite to the cylinder, a pitman connecting said arm With the crank-shaft, an cecentric on the crank-shaft on the same side of the Web as the cylinder, a pitman reciprocated by the eccentric, a bracket on the cylinder, a shaft in said bracket, a walkingbeam on said shaft, an arm on said shaft connectedwvith the last-mentioned pitman, and reciprocating valves for the cylinder operated by the Walking-beam.
