PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM PORTER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,083, dated April 23, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, WILLIAM PORTER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Steam- Pumps, of which the following is a specification:
The first part of my invention consists of the arrangement of a steam-cylinder placed upon the top of a hollow column, in the inside of which is a force-p11 mp, the crank-shaft bein g placed beneath the pump, and operated by means of a connecting-rod, the upper end of which works upon a cross-head which is attached to the piston-rod. The object of this part of my invention is to secure a substantial and compact steam-pump, easily accessible in all its parts, and having a rotary motion. The second part of my invention consists of the reversible valve-seats, valves, and chambers. The object of this part of my invention is to make a set of simple, durable, and efl'ective valves and seats that can be easily and readily got at, repaired, or replaced by new ones. The seats being reversible, can beturned over when one side is worn out. These valves and seats can be applied to double or sin gle-acting, vertical or horizontal pumps.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Sheet 1, Figure 1, is a front elevation of a vertical single-actin g steam-pump. Fig. 2 is a side view of same partly in section. Sheet 2, Fig. 3, is a vertical section through pumpvalves and seats. Fig. 4 is a front view of slide and cut-ofi' valves. Fig. 5 is a side section of same. Fig. 6 is a plan of cross-head. Fig. 7 is a side view of same.
A is a steam-cylinder, which is bolted upon the top of a hollow column, B, in which is the stufiing-box O, fittedwith gland D. The slidevalve E has a port or opening, F, through which the steam enters the cylinder to the under side of the piston. On the back of this valve is a cut-off valve, G, which is adjusted by the screw-stem and nuts H in such a manner as to admit any desired volume of steam through the port F below the piston. The steam-piston, piston-rod, and pump-plunger I are here made in one piece. To the piston-rod is attached a cross-head, J, having a journal, K, for connecting rod h, which operates the crank-shaft O placed beneath thepump. Upon one end of this shaft is the fiy-wheel P, and upon the other the eccentric for working the slide-valve. Attached to the base within the column is a single-acting pump, Q, with a branch, E. To this branch are fitted the double seats S S for suction and delivery valves. The guard of the suction-valve T, through which the water presses to the delivery-valve, works in the seat of the delivery-valve as a guide. The guard of the delivery-valve works in the chamber attached to the branch 1; as a guide. The suction-branch U has a bonnet, V, and attachments, 11, opening to the suction-valve, so that it can be'cleaned. W is the suctionpipe a0 a7, discharge-pipes; and Y is the airvessel.
Claim.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the reversible valveseats S S, valves T T, placed in the chamber of a steam-pump, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the chamber attached to branch R, valve-seats S S, valves T T, branch U, bonnet V, and attachment 42', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement of the pump Q, crankshaft O, cross-head J, piston-rod and pumpplunger I, constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially set forth.
WILLIAM PORTER.
