Referring to the drawings, the device comprises a base 1 which may be made of various forms but which is shown as comprising spaced members 1 between which extend the boards 1 secured thereto to form a platform. The bracket 2 is secured adjacent the rear edge of the base 1 substantially centrally thereof by screws or other suitable means, and a standard 3 is bolted to the brackets 2 and rises vertically therefrom. While the standard 3 will be made in various forms, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the same is shown as of channel shape with the side flanges of the channel projecting rearwardly. The sides of said channel are formed with upwardly directed ratchet teeth 3 spaced throughout the upper part of the standard. A cross bar or cross head a is provided which may be of any suitable desired shape but which, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, is also shown as of channel shape, the horizontal flanges of the channel projecting forwardly. Said channels are provided with an opening centrally thereof adapted to receive the channel or standard 8 so that the ci'osshead is vertically slidablc on said standard. The member 4-. has a pair of ears 4i projecting rearwardly from its web between which is pivoted a lug projecting forwardly from the curved pawl 55, said pawl having an upwardly extending portion 5 forming a handle and being normally pressed to engaging position with one of the teeth 3" by a compression coiled spring 6 fitting over a projection on said pawl and a short projection on the rear of member a. it will thus be seen that the pawl 5 holds the cross head a in various vertical positions. The standard 3 is also provided with a plurality of spaced holes 3 disposed centrally of its web which are adapted to receive stop members which may take the form of cotter pins 7 disposed above and below the member 4 and forming stops therefor. Adjacent each end of the member 4:, headed pivot pins 8 extend through the flanges thereof and form the pivots for hubs 9v of a pair of levers having their forward portions formed as curved fiat members 9. The members 9 are oppositely disposed with their concave sides facing each other and are carried at their rear endsby downwardly projecting portions 9 depending from hubs 9 The hubs 9 also have rearwardly projecting arms 9 extending therefrom which have their rear ends apertured and connected bya tension therein at each side in any one of which the respective pivots 8 may be disposed so that the hubs 9 will be disposed in different positions,thus positioning the arms 9 for different sized bags. The arms 9 are stopped in their movement toward each other by stop pins 13, there being one pin for each arm, and said pins being adapted to be disposed in anyone of a plurality of holes 14 formed in parallel ribs 4- projecting from the rear of the web of member 4, there being one of said ribs adjacent each end of said member. A frame 4 of substantially triangular shape projects rearwardly and centrally from the rear of the web of cross head and said frame has a rib 4! extending centrally thereof at right angles to the length of the cross head at, which rib is disposed in a vertical plane and provided with a pair of slots 4 The spring 10 is adapted to be pressed into said slots, the edges of said slots formed by the rib 4 entering between the convolutions of said spring, as shown in Fig. 6. Disposed infront of the cross head i and the inner ends of arms 9 is a plate form ed of sections 15 and 16, the sections 16 hav ing inturned flanges 16 at its top and bottom adjacent one end forming a guidewav in which plate 15 slides. The sections 15 and 16 each have secured thereto by rivets or other suitable means, downwardly extending hooks 17, which hooks are adapted to be received in'one of a plurality of holes 18 formed in the flanges of cross head l. The cross head 4 hastongues 4 projecting forwardly from and centrally from the flanges 'thereof to form a. backing for the central part of the plates 15 and 16.
In operation, the bag to be filled will be passed in the rear of the platesl5 and 17 around the rear of one of the arms 9 and hooked over the supporting hooks 9' thereon. The other side of the bag will now be passed around the outside of the other arm 9. In order to easily place the bag on the latter arm 9 without undue strain, the handle11 is grasped and the arm 9 swung inwardly against the tension of spring'lO. There will now be sufficient slack in the bag for the same easily to be passed around the outside of the arms and placed on the supporting hooks 9 iVith the bag so placed, the arm is released and the mouth of the bag is then held in wide open position. the front side thereof extendingbetween the outer ends of arms 9. The handle 11. preferably is made detachable so that it can be easily connected tothe end of either arm 9 to suit the convenience of a left-handed or right-handed operator. It will be understood that the pivots 8, in their hubs 9 will be disposed in proper holes 12 to suit the size of the bag to be filled and that the hooks 17 carrying plate sections 15'and 16 will be correspondingly adjusted. After the bag is positioned on the arms 9, cross head't and said arms will be adjusted on standard 3 by manipulation of the pawl"5 so that] the bottom of the bag just rests on the base 1, as shown in Fig. 1. Grain, or other material can now be easily and quickly placed in the bag, the plate 'formed by sections 15 and 16 at the rear of the bag acting to direct the grain thereinto. The arms 9 are tensioned by the spring 10 so that the bag continuously held in tensioned and open position. If the hubs 9 are moved inwardly, as in dicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6, the spring 10 will be disposed in the inner'slot t as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6,"so that the proper tension will be had upon the arms 9. The tension of the arms 9 and 9 can be adjusted by disposing the pin 13 in either one of the holes 14. It will be noted that the ratchet teeth 3 are directed upwardly so that the crosshead d and the parts carried thereby can be raised by merely being lifted or moved upwardly on standard 3, the same being held from downward movement by the pawl 5. The provision'of the stop members 7 eliminates the possibility of jerking the cross head entirely off the standard or of releasing the same to drop too far. When the bag has been filled the cross head can be quickly dropped to be out of the way during the bag tying operation. The cross head willv simply drop to the lower cotter pins '4'. The upperpins Twill be set so that when the cross head is again raisedit will. be in proper position for the next sack.
The ins 7 can of course beset to suit difp 7 ferent len ths of sacks. When the crosshead is lifted it may be necessary to hold the platform 1 with the foot. By supporting the sack so it just reaches the platform the same will fill properly at the corners and a shaking or lifting of the sack will be unnecessary. The holder is also out of the way during the filling operation. The pins 13 prevent undue tension in the bag when it is engaged by arms 9. The triangular frame 4 adds rigidity and strength to the structure as well as forming a support for the rib 4.
From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided a simple and stitcient structure of bag holder and one that can be easily and quickly operated. The parts of the device are comparatively few and when assembled, the device has no tendency to become disarranged. The device has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and found to be very successful and efficient.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of applicants invention, Which, generally stated, consists in the novel parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A bag holding device comprising a standard, oppositely disposed curved arms projecting therefrom disposed substantially in a horizontal plane with their concave sides toward each other, said arms being oscillatable about vertical pivots, resilient means normally tending to swing said arms apart, a cross head carrying said pivots having two series of holes therethrough, a pivot for each arm being insertible in different holes of one series whereby the spacing of said arms may be varied to suit different sized bags, and adjustable stops in said cross head limiting the outward movement of said arms.
2. A bag holding device comprising a standard, a cross head secured to and extending at each side of said standard adjacent its upper end, levers pivoted in the ends of said cross head about vertical axes and having rearwardly projecting arms, a coiled tension spring connecting sait arms, said levers having oppositely curved arms projecting to the front of said cross head and having their concave sides toward each other, said cross head having means for mounting said levers in different positions, and means for holding said spring in flexed position in certain positions of said levers.
3. A bag holding device comprising a standard, oppositely curved arms projecting forwardly therefrom disposed substantially in a horizontal plane with their concave sides towards each other, said arms being oscillatable about vertical pivots, resilient means normally tending to swing said arms apart, said pivots and arms being adjustable toward and from each other, and a material directing plate disposed in front of said standard and the inner ends of said arms and extending between the latter, said plate being adjustable as to length in accordance with the adjustment of said pivots and arms.
l. A bag holding device comprising a standard, a cross head adapted to slide vertically thereon and be held in different positions thereon, levers adjustably pivoted in said cross head at each side of said standard about vertical axes having rcarwardly projecting arms and having curved bag holding arms carried at their forward ends and disposed in front of said standard, a spring connecting said rearwardly projecting arms, said cross head having a rearwardly projecting portion having spaced upwardly opening slots therein, said spring being adapted to be disposed in said slots in flexed position in certain positions of said levers.
5. A bag holding device comprising a standard, a cross head vertically slidablc thereon, means for holding said cross head in different positions on said standard, a bag holding means carried on said cross head, and stops on said standard above and below said cross head limiting its upward and downward movement, said stops being arranged to be disposed in difierent vertical positions.
6. A bag holding device comprising a base, a standard rising therefrom, a cross head comprising a channel member having its flanges projecting forwardly and horizontally, said flanges having alined apertures therethrough receiving said standard, pivot pins extending through said flanges at each side of and equidistant therefrom, levers having intermediate hubs journaled on said pivots and disposed between said flanges, said levers having arms projecting through openings in the web of said cross head, a tensile spring connecting said arms, stop means for limiting the movement of said arms under the influence of said spring, and said levers having downwardly turned por tions forwardly of said hubs from which extend forwardly fiat curved arms having their concave sides facing each other, said curved arms carrying bag supporting hooks.
7. The structure set forth in claim 6, said standard being formed of a channel bar having its flanges projecting rearwardly and formed with ratchet teeth, a pawl pivoted to the rear of said cross head adapted to co-act with said teeth, said standard having a plurality of spaced holes through the web thereof, and means disposed in said. holes above and below said cross head to limit the movement thereof.
8. The structure set forth in claim 6, said cross head having a triangular frame projecting from the rear thereof carrying an upstanding rib having slots therein in which said tensile spring is disposed and may be held in various positions.
9. The structure set forth in claim 6, said stop means comprising pins and said cross head having rearwardly projecting horizontal plates on its rear side having a plurality of spaced holes therethrough, in any one of which said pins may be disposed" 10. A bag holding device comprising a base, a standard rising therefrom, a cross head vertically slidable on and adapted to be held on said standard, oppositely curved bag holding arms secured to said cross head and projecting forwardly therefrom and a plate carried by said cross head and disposed in front of said cross head and the inner ends of said arms and projecting above the latter.
11. The structure set forth in claim 10, said arms being adjustable toward and from each other and said plate comprising laterally telescoping sections, and means for supporting the same 7 invarious positions whereby its width can be varied to suit the adjustment of said arms.
12. A bag holding device comprising a standard having upwardly directed ratchet a head in various positions, bag holding means 30 carried by said crosshead, and adjustable stops in said standard above and below said cross-head to limit the movement of said crosshead whereby when a bag is filled said handle lever may be operated to permit said crosshead to drop to said lower stop and slacken the top of the bag so that the same may be tied.
