Description

Dec. 9
- 1,519,052 M. B. REACH INDICATOR FOR GOLF CLUBS Inventor: Jv z'lfon B. Reach, fl w fiz? Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON B. REACH, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO A. G. SPALDING d. 8308., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A
CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
INDICATOR FOR GOLF CLUBS.
Application med February 7, 19%. Serial No. 681,285.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON B. REACH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and 6 State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicators for Golf Clubs, of which the following is a specification.
The, invention concerns a tell tale device 1 for indicating to one practicing golf whether or not excessive speed is attained on the back swing of the club so that the player can modify or correct his fault. A. too rapid back swing of the club is undesirable because of throwing, or tendency to throw, the
player out of balance.
I show in the accompanying drawing one exemplification of my invention in which the indicator is in the form of an audible signal, though it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the kind of signal shown or the detail construction thereof.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a front view of a golf club with my invention attached.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the attachment, and
Fig. 4. an end view of the signal device.
In these drawings 1 indicates the shaft of a golf club. Ihe signal device in the example shown consists of 'a small section of pipe 2 having an organ reed 3 carried at one end. This reed is suitably mounted in a 35 block or member 4 slidably mounted in a dovetail channel 5 formed in the reduced end of the pipe member or tube 2. The tube is open at its front end and the device is attached to the shaft in such a position that i on the back swing of the club the open end or mouth of the pipe or tubular member will be presented for the passage of the air therethrough on said back swing, and if the speed of this back swing is too high such as would tend to cause the player to be disconcerted or thrown out of orm, the
reed will sound and notify the user of his fault and he can then reduce the speed of his back swing in subsequent strokes to a degree that will get no response from the signal, and by practice the proper back swing will become a habit.
The device may be attached to the shaft in any suitable way and as an example it ma be provided with arms 6 to bear on the she t and secured thereto by adhesive tape 7.
The bottom of the tube or pipe may be formed into a mouth piece as indicated at 8 by which the lips may be applied to the device for testing its operativeness.
I claim:
1. In combination with a golf club, a signal device carried thereby to indicate speed of the back swing of said club in excess of a prescribed speed.
In combination with a olf club, a device mounted thereon to in icate speed of the back swing in excess of a prescribed speed.
3. In combination with a golf club, an audible signal device mounted thereon and 'operated by the pressure of air to indicate speed of back swin of the club in excess of a prescribed spee substantially as described.
4. In combination with a golf club a signal device mounted'thereon operated by the pressure of air on the back swing at a prescribed excessive speed, said device consisting of a pipe or tubular member having an open mouth presented for receiving the air pressure on the back swing and an audible signal member carried by said pipe.
5. In combination with a golf club, a pipe or tube mounted thereon having its open mouth presented to receive the pressure of air on the back swing of the club, and a reed carried by said pipe to sound when the speed of the back swing is in excess of a prescribed speed, substantially as described. 90
In testimony whereof, I a 'my signature.
MILTON B. REACH.
