Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS MEYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toy Lung-Exercisers, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a toy for use in testing the power of the lungs and exercising the same.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a simple and effective device for use in exercising the lungs and testing the respiratory power of the lungs.
To this end the invention contemplates the use of a mouthpiece adjustably arranged with respect to a scale and which permits of directing a current of air from the lungs on to a movably supported member in the nature of a hammer adapted, when actuated by the current of air blown through the mouthpiece, to strike a bell or gong, the distance between the mouthpiece and the movable member being indicated by the scale, thereby permitting of determining theforce of air that the person can exhale in a single breath.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View; and Fig. 3'is a plan view of a modified structure.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a base 10 having a substantially dove-tailed groove 11 in which is arranged to slide a block 12 carrying an upright 13, on which is suitably mounted a mouthpiece 14, a scale 15 being arranged upon the base in juxtaposition to the upright 13, as shown. Mounted to swing upon the base 10 is a striking element 16 consisting of an upright 17 having pivotal connection with the base and carrying a hammer 19, said hammer being adapted to strike a bell or gong 20, also supported upon the base.
In the use of the device described the striking element is raised to a substantially vertical position as shown, and is held 1n said position by' a stop lug 21 formed with a bearing 22 which provides the pivotal connection between the upright 17 and the base 10. The upright 13 is now ad: vaneed along the scale by moving the block 12 in the groove 11 until the desired distance between the mouthpiece 14: and hammer 19 is obtained. The operator then blows a quantity of air from the lungs through the mouthpiece and against one end of the hammer, causing the same to fall and strike the gong, provided the quantity of air is of sufficient pressure and force to move the striking element so that it will strike the gong or signal.
In Fig 3 there is shown a slightly modified form of device and in which, instead of having the scale as indicated by the numeral 15 in Fig. 1, and wherein it consists of a U-shaped bar 23, the scale is made directly on the base and a suitable indicator 24 in the nature of a pointer, secured to the block 12, is adapted to indicate the graduations on the scale to which the block is adjusted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a toy lung tester, the combination of a base having a groove therein, a block slidable in the groove, an upright carried by the block, a scale in juxtaposition to the upright, a mouthpiece on the upright, a
striking element pivoted to swing on the base, and a signal on the base and adapted to be struck by the striking element when the same is actuated by a current of air projected through the mouthpiece.
2. In a toy lung tester, a base, an upright adjustable on the base, a mouthpiece carried by the upright, a scale injuxtaposition to the upright and denoting the adjustment of the upright on the base, a striking element movably supported on the base to be actuated by a current of air blown through the mouthpiece, and a signal on the base and adapted to be sounded by said striking element.
