The invention relates to an improvement in guards for gas ovens having a plurality of burners controlled by separate valves and in which it is desirable that gas cannot be turned on to one burner or set of burners while another burner is lighted. Usually the arrangement comprises an oven with gas burners for heating the oven and also a broiler burner with separate valves for controlling the fiow of gas to the respective burners. In such case it is desirable that provision be made whereby gas cannot be turned on to the broiler burner while the oven burners are lighted, or vice versa.
The object of the invention is to provide a device or valve control whereby the valve controlling one burner can be opened to permit of the passag'eof gas tothe burner only when the valve controllingthe other burner is closed and prevented from being opened. More especially it is the object of the invention to provide a device operating certain of said valves have first been manually closed. It is a further object. of the invention to'provide a device in thena'ture of'an attachment applicable to a certainarrangement of gas manifolds and gas fittings and on which manifolds the device is movable with relation to the valves.

Referring to the drawings 1 represents the gas oven. Arranged upon the side 2 of the oven'are gas manifolds 3 and 4, respectively, to which gas is fed from a fixture 5. The manifolds are parallelly arranged, spaced some little distance from one another and fixedly secured to act as a mounting for the guard-carrying frame later to be referred to, clips 6 fixed to the side of the oven assisting in the retention of the manifolds. Gas is fed from the manifold 3 to a burner (not shown) arranged Within the oven and which, for purposes of illustration, may be considered to be a broiler burner. From the manifold 4 gas is fed toa burner or burners also located within or beneath the oven, which, for purposes of illustration, may be considered to be burners for heating the oven.
Gas is fed from the manifold 3 to the broiler burner through a fixture 7 connecting with the under side of the manifold. Arranged within the fixture for controlling the flow of gas is a valve 8 having a stem 9 turning upon an axis at right angles to the manifold and provided with a handle 10 for turning the stem and thereby opening and closing the valve. The handle 10 turns upon an arc in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the two manifolds and when the valve is closed. the handle will assume a position substantially parallel with the manifold 3 and when th valve is open a position substantially at right angles to themanifold.
Gas is fed from the manifold 4 to the oven burner or burners (two preferably being employed) through fixtures 11 connecting with the underside of the manifold. In each of these fixtures is arranged a valve 12 having a valve stem 13 which turns upon an axis at substantially right angles to the manifold and carries a handle 15 by which the stem is turned. The handle 15 to each valve turns upon an arc in a plane substantially parallel with the planes of the two manifolds, and when the valve is closed-the handle will assume a position substantially in line or parallel with the manifold 1 and when the valve is openthe handle will assume a position substantially at right angles to the manifold.
Mounted upon the respective manifolds to slide thereon is a guard-carrying frame 16. The frame is preferably of a generally triangulanform and is mounted to slide upon the manifolds through'ringfonmingxconnections 17 which embrace the respective manifolds, one ring being provided for' the manifold 3 and two ringsfor' the manifold 4;. In order that'the frame 16 may beuconveniently applied to themanifolds the'rings-li' are preferably split rings,"-
each' ring having an attachable half 17 provided with a flange 18 which is secured to' the body of-thefra1ne by a screw connection='19. Thus mounted the frame 16 is movable upon the-manifolds with a forward'and" reverse movementand accordingly 1s mov-- ablewith relation to the various valves con-' trolling the r flow of gas from: the respective manifolds.
Carried by. the frame '16 are guards 20,'- 2l'fl'and 22," respectively. The guard 20 is arranged adjacent the valve 8 of the mani 'fold 3 and the guards 21 and 22 are ar ra-nged adjacent-the valves '12 of the 1112I11l' fo'lda. a

It will accordingly be seen that when gas is flowing outof one manifold to a burner gas cannot be admitted to a burner to which gas is fed from the other manifold and'can only be admitted to flow from the other manifold when the flow of gas from the first manifoldhas been shut off.
In the case-of the valve 8 which controls the flow of gas to the broiler burner from the-manifold 3, the arrangement is such that the frame cannot be moved to remove the guard-s from the valves controlling the'flo-w of gas from the manifold 4 until the'valive 8 has been manually'closed; In other words,

In the case: of the valves 12 controlling the fiowof gas from the manifolds to-the oven burners, it is preferred-that these valves: may close automatically as I the frame ismovedfor moving the guard-s over'the handlesvcontrolling the valves." If preferred, the valves 12* may be fitted with handles like the valves 8 in which case the frame cannotibemov ed for-moving: the guards over these handlesuntil the handles have first both' been turned manually to positions closing the" valves:

2. The combination with a gas oven having separate burners, of separate spaced manifolds arranged exterior of the oven and valves controlling the flow of gas from the respective manifolds to the respective burners, a frame mounted to slide upon said manifolds, and guards carried by said frame for preventing opening of the valves when closed, said guards being so arranged that when said frame is moved into a determinate position the valve controlling the flow of gas from one manifold to one of the burners will be open and the valve controlling the flow of gas from the other manifold to the other burner will be closed and prevented from opening.
3. The combination with a gas oven having separate burners, of separate manifolds arranged exterior of the oven and from which gas is supplied to the separate burners, valves controlling the fiow of gas from said respective manifolds to the respective burners, a frame mounted to slide with a forward and reverse movement upon said manifolds and to have thereon a limited and defined range of movement, and guards carried by said frame for preventing opening of the valves when closed, said guards being so arranged that when said frame is in one determinate position its guards may leave clear for opening or closure the valve controlling the flow of gas from one manifold and prevent the opening of the valve controlling the gas from the other manifold until said frame has been moved into another determinate position.
4. The combination with a gas oven having separate burners, of separate spaced manifolds arranged exterior of the oven one above the other and from which gas is supplied respectively to the separate burners, valves controlling the flow of gas from the respective manifolds to the respective burners, each of said valves being provided with a handle adapted to turn in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of said manifolds for opening and closing the valve, a frame mounted to slide with a forward and reverse movement upon said manifolds and to have thereon a limited and defined range of movement, and guards carried by said frame adapted to fit over the handles of said valves on moving said frame when said handles are in a position closing the valves for preventing turning of the handles and opening of the valves, said guards being so arranged that when said frame is in one determinate position its guards may leave clear for turning the handle of one valve controlling the fiow of gas from one manifold and prevent the turning of the handle of the other valve controlling the flow of gas from the other manifold until said frame has been moved into another determinate position.
