Description

L. POE
BUCKLE Dec. 9,1 24,
Filed A e, 1923 INVENTOR Q-QQJQIQAX.
ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LESLIE POE, OF CLEVELAND, MISSISSJEPI.
BUCKLE.
Application filed. August 6, 1923. Serial No. 655,960.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESLIE POE, a citlizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Bolivar and State of 71 Mississippi, have invented new and useful engaged therefrom.
The invention also contemplates a buckle of this character which is solely constructed from sheet metal and when placed under strain, the parts will be positively locked or wedged, this holding the back band in adjusted positions at all times.
Still another object. of the invention is to provide a back band buckle which includes a novel snap hook for association with one of the harness parts and is such as to be readily engaged or disengaged from the harness part.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, constructions and arrangement of parts and operation to be hereinafter specifically re ferred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is atop plan view of a buckle constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view,
Figure 4: is a transverse sectional view on line 44: of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a detail view of the lock or wedge element employed in the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates a rectangular sheet of metal bent at its longitudinal edges to afford side walls 6. These side walls are tapered or inclined rearwardly and are bent upon themselves to provide flanges 7 which extend at right angles with respect to the side walls. The rear ends of the flanges are riveted or otherwise secured to the rear end of the sheet 5 while their forward ends are formed with upstanding lugs or stops 9.
Slidahly mounted on the flanges 7 is a locking device which includes a plate 10 having its forward longitudinal edge extended upwardly at right angles as indicated at 11 and formed with serrations or teeth 12 adapted to engage the back band. A wedging element 13 is carried by the inner face of the plate 11 and includes a metal plate designated at 15 provided with a roughened surface 16 to engage the back band. EX- tending longitudinally across the plate 11 and secured thereto is a bar 17 formed with L-shaped guides 18 at its ends which slidably receive the flanges 7 and the side walls The sheet 5 is provided with a slot 19 adjacent its rear end through which the back hand designated at B is received, the latter being inserted between the locking device and the under face of the sheet 5 and passed through a slot 21 in the body 5 adjacent its forward end. With the back 'hand in the position shown, it will be seen that upon placing of any strain thereon the plate 11 will move rearwardly thus producing a wedging action between this. plate and the under face of the plate 5 and thereby positively holding the back band against any movement.
In conjunction with my improved back band buckle, I provide a snap hook, which includes a hook element formed with the forward end of the sheet 5. An inner bracket 23 is secured to the under face of the sheet 5, at its forward end and is bifurcated to provide bearings 24:. A looking tongue or keeper 25 is provided which has one end formed with a sleeve or hearing 26 and is arranged between the bearings 24, the bearings and sleeve 24 receiving a pivoted pin 28. A leaf spring 29 is interposed between the locking tongue and keeper 25 and has one end. positioned against the latter to hold the forward end of the locking tongue or keeper against the hook while its opposite end is riveted or otherwise secured to the sheet 5 as indicated at 30.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall With-1* in the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention What I desire to claim and protect by Letters-Patent is 1. A buckle comprising a body provided with longitudinally inclined guides at opposite sides thereof and further provided with a pair of slots v a Wedge element slidab-le in the guides adapted to co-act With the body in holding the flexible element therebetween and a pair of guides carried by the wedging element and embracing the guides in the body. I
2. A buckle comprising a body provided With longitudinally inclined guides at opposite sides thereof and further provided With a pair of slots, a Wedge element slidable in the guides adapted to co-act with the body in holding the flexible element therebetween and a pair of guides carried "by the Wedging element and embracing the guides in the body and a roughened plate carried by the inner face of the slidable plate to engage the flexible element.
3. A device of the character described comprising a body bent upon itself at its longitudinal elements to provide parallel side Walls, the latter being inclined rear- Wardly, flanges formed on the side Walls and having their rear ends secured to the body, the body being provided with open ings, a plate slidable on the flanges, an inclined roughened plate carried by the first mentioned plate, a bar extending longitudinally across the slidable plate and secured thereto, the ends of the bar being formed with L-shaped guides which slidably receive the flanges and side Walls.
In testimony whereof I afiix my si nature.
LESLIE OE.
