COMBINED CHECK PROTECTOR AND BLOTTER.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that 1, lemon TORNBERG, a vitizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainfield, in. the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Combined Check Protectors and Blotters, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a check protector and blotter adapted for the individual immediate use of a person drawing a bank check, enabling such person to dry the ink on the check with the use of the blotter and then protect the figures or writing, or both. by puncturing the check in the zones of such figures or writing.

One object of the invention is to produce an efficient article for the purposes specified, which shall be convenient of use and of such inexpensive nature that a bank can afford to give the same to its depositors, especially when the article bears, as it may, the advertisement of the bank. The article of my invention may be folded into or closed within a check book, so as always to be handy for use, and the article serves as a conven ience when a check is drawn in that it provides a blotter and means to guard against the alteration of the check, thereby protect ing both the drawer of the check and the bank on which the check is drawn.

In carrying out my invention I provide a blotter of appropriate size for blotting the writing on a bank check and on one face of the blotter I firmly secure a strip or plate of thin flexible sheet metal having its surface corresponding with the Zones of the writing on the check, covered with small punctures, the burrs formed at the punctures being exposed upwardly and forming a surface of cutting edges adapted when a check is held over and rubbed downwardly against the same to sufficiently perforate the check to render alteration of the writing thereon, without detection, extremely difficult. The blotter serves several purposes, one being to dry the ink on a check, another to carry the check protector plate and another to provide a cushion-backing for the protector and against which the protector is pressed when a check is being held over and rubbed downwardly against the protector, the cushion at this time aiding the thin protector plate in the performance of its functions.

The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a combined check protector and blotter constructed 'in accordance with and embodying my invention;

Fig. 2 is an end view, on a larger scale, of the same;

Fig. 3 is a vertical section, partly broken away and on an enlarged scale, through the same, taken on the dotted line 33 of Fig. 1 and illustrating, by dotted lines, a check in position on the protector for puncturing the necessary portions of the same;

Fig. is a perspective view of a modified form of check protector and blotter embodying my invention;

Fig. 5 is a rear view of one corner portion of the same;

In the drawings, referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I show a combined check protector and blotter of the construction preferred by me, and therein 10 designates a sheet of absorbent blot-ting paper of good quality and reasonably soft texture and of convenient elongated shape for use in covering and blotting a check, 11 a thin flexible strip or sheet of metal suitably positioned lengthwise on said blotter between the upper and lower edge portions of the same; 12 a strip of paper or the like glued or otherwise secured to and covering the face of the blotter above the metallic strip 11 and lapping upon the upper edge portions of said strip, and 13 a strip of paper or the like glued or otherwise secured to and covering the face of the letter below the metallic strip 11 and lapping upon the lower edge portions of said strip. The facing edge portions of the strips 12, 18 serve to secure the strip 11 tions upon the blotter 10 but said strip may be additionally secured to the blotter-1O by additional means, as will be understood from other portions of this specification. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I apply the strip 11 upon the blotterlO and then glue the paper strips 12, 13 upon the blotter and edge portions of the strip 11.

The strip 11 is a section of a thin metallic ribbon and is so positioned on the-blotterl-O that when a bank check has been .written upon and p1aced,'w-ith its face down, upon the article-of my invention, the l ne of writing .on the check will. be upon the length of the strip-1.1. The strip 11 is closely punctured over its entire or any appropriateportion of its surface the punctures creating sharp edged burrs 14 which project .up wardly andthus becomegexposed to receive andpuncture the cheek along the zone or zones thereof bea-ring the writing, as -represented in ;Fi;g.'3,1wherein;a check pierced by theburrs -14 is indicated by f the dotted lines 15.

The paper strips .12, 13 impart durability .to the blotter 10;and increasethe wperiod-of usefulness of the same, andi n-addition said strips afllordndequate surfaces to receiveadvertising matter, as shown, it being intended that the-face of my article-shall bear the advertisement of a bankandbe in the general form or similitude-of a bank-check.

In. the use of the article described, the blotter 10 will be made useiof toblot or dry the ink on a check as drawn, and thereupon the check will be placed, face down, upon the article with the writing thereon super posed upon the strip 1-1,-after which the drawer will rub his hand orfingers with -,a down-pressure against the back of the check so as to causethe face-ofthe che-ck to be punctured or cut by, the burrs 1' 1, said burrs sufliciently m-utilating the check -to prevent alteration of the writing thereon without detection. Thestrip .11 is thin and flexible and theblotter 10 ,provides aeyielding cushion or base for the ,strip 11, and hence-the articleis yieldable to verticalpressure and the drawer of the check maysrubrthe check over the strip llwithout danger to hishands and obtain an .eflici-ent actionf of the burrs 141 onthe check.

The article as a -.Wh0l6 is designed to be carried in apocket checkbook so as always to be handy for immediateuse.

In the form of the inventionishown in Figs. 4: and 5, the advertising matterwillbeapplied directly upon vthe plate 17 by the art of printing, embossing or other convenient method. The construction shown inFigs. l-and 5, is very desirable in that the plate 17 fully protects one face of theblotter and permitsof'the renewalof the blotter from time totime until=the plate itself has ceased tobeuseful.
