UNITED STATES JACOB P. RICI-IE, OF KANSAES CITY, MISSOURI.
WALL-PAIER-REMOVING MACHINE.
Application filed July 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB P. RroHE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Paper-Removing Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifioation.
This invention relates to wall paper removers and the primary object of the in vention is to provide an efficient light portable device for steaming the wall paper so as to soften the adhesive and the paper whereby it may be conveniently removed from the wall.
The invention contemplates the provision of a reservoir to contain water with a heater for generating steam and a frame for supporting perforate tubes in communication with the reservoir or steel boiler to apply the steam under pressure to the paper and means is provided for packing the edge of the frame so that the steam will be localized, thereby obtaining greater efliciency than would be possible if the steam leaked to atmosphere The novel construction of the invention will be apparent by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which F 1 is a perspective view of a wall paper remover, part of the reservoir wall being broken away to show the interior construction of the remover.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, viewed from the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view through the remover.
Fig. 5 is a sectional View on the line 5-.5 of Fig. 2.
The steam boiler or reservoir consists of a relatively small tank 1 illustrated as substantially rectangular with an offset steam space 2 closed by a rectangular plate 3, except for a central outlet opening 4 in the plate. The plate constitutes part of a frame and it is provided with outwardly turned 1924. Seriall No. 725,537.
ends or flanges 5 which carry yielding packing strips (3 adapted to be pressed against the wall to seal the space within the perimeter of the plate from atmosphere. The fname plate 3 carries a plurality of radial perforate pipes 7 merging toward a com mon center surrounding the opening 4 so that the steam will flow from the steam space 2- through the opening 4: into the pipes and out through the perforations 8.
The pipes are triangular to provide oppositely inclined faces so that the steam issuing from the pipes will. pass through the perforations 8 in the form of jets in different directions so as to thoroughly steam the paper and in view of the fact that the packing 6 is provided, the steam will not pass to atmosphere so long as the remover is pressed against the wall but the issuing steam will be retained in the outer steam space 9, formed by the plate 3 and the pack ing strips 6.
The water is generated into steam by suitable heating means. I have shown an electric heater coil 10 in the heater boiler or reservoir which may receive current from any suitable source through the plug 11 and the conductor 12.
In order to render the device portable so that the operator may move it over the wall, I have provided handle 13 which is fastened at one end to the top 14 of the boiler and at the opposite end to the frame by a bracket 15. The boiler can be filled through the filler cap or tube 16 and the water level in the boiler may be determined by the sight gauge 17. The handle renders the device easily portable so that with one hand the operator may press the frame against the wall and allow the steam from the space 2 to pass through the opening 4 into the pipes under pressure and flow under pressure over the paper so that it will be quickly loosened.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is L A. wall paper removing machine comprising a steam generator, a frame supported by the steam generator provided with a back wall. having an opening through which steam from the generator may pass, radial perforate pipes in the frame secured to the back wall and communicating with the opening therein so that steam from the generator will be distributed to the radial pipes and be discharged into all parts of the frame at the same pressure, and a packing around the edge of the frame to contact with the Wall paper so that the steam issuing from the pipes Will be confined Within the area bounded by the packing.
2. A Wall paper removing machine comprising a steam generator, a frame supported by the steam generator having a back wall provided with an opening communicat ing with the steam space of the generator, radial perforate pipes communicating With the opening, the pipes being triangular in cross section so that the steam issuing from the jets in one pipe will flow through the steam issuing from the adjacent pipe, the steam from the two jets combining to create a softening effect upon the adhesive of the wall paper, and a packing around the edge of the frame to contact With the Wall paper to confine the steam Within the space bounded by the packin in testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
